Une bo Daniel has long passed his th but for those ri pains would be hale and be y. Hia father set- eerie feng hap He ‘ Cneke Joln, from his earliest recollectiou, learned to love the great solitude of the forest, the wild ant. mals and birds that fattened upon the masts that the great God furnish- ed for his dependants and when man came to lord it over the lower creat- ures, the great storehouse of nature which had been such a bountiful pro- vider, ceased to produce and the game trecked west and Unele John followed in their wake to Bates county where he made his final stand, He said he would give all he possessed (and he is well supplied with this world’s woods,) toend his days amid such surroundings as was spent his youth and early manhood, He said that the blood curdling tales of wild ant- mals attacking man was all fabrica- tion, that the fiercest animalsin their wild stage are afrald of the scent of man and will avoid Lim, Alla man needed for the support of his family was five or ten acres of corn and his rifle furnished him a bountiful table of the choicest ments. {le tells some very amusing stories of those early days, one of which was his race from 8 “painter” which omitted an un- earthly yelland caused him to declare that he jumped seventy feet. The “painter” proved to be his older brother bent on frightening him, and who was unable to catch himoa horse back. score and ten and ¢, The Globe-Democrat tells of a pros- perous widower who advertised for a wife, with instruccions to address all communications to a private box number given, Inu few days he re- ceived four letters from willing maids; one from each of his three grown daughters and one from his niece. The widower is now wonder- ing if all the matrimonial fools in tliat eity are contined to his own family, Ketter roads mean bigger and bets ter towns, better farms and more profits for the farmer, It means more ease and comfort forthose who trayel over the country roads; big- ger loads and greater ease to the horses and mules which have to draw them. But talk will not better the roads, where work and the expendi- ture of money are necessary.—Neva- da Mail. The mail order houses have been condemmed by every rural paper in the whole country and the people advised to buy of fiome merchants, Like every other good thing -such advice can be over worked, and tend to give those firins & whole lot offree advertising, for which we would charge our home merchants current rates, Tn Missouri, if a man is killed in a railroad accident through no fault of his own, is married, his relatives can recover $5,000; but ifa bachelor, the law does not regard him as worth acent. My! We never Bhew before that a Missouri bachelor was so worthless as that President Roosevelt, having just finished a series of sparring lessons with Donovan, has signed up with Mike Dwyer, the heavyweight catch- as-catch-can wrestler. Thepresident is evidently getting ready to take a tall out of some jiu jitsu celebrity. Congressman Benton of the fit- teenth district sent wordfrom Wash- ington that he will again be a can- didate for congress, Congressman Benton was defeated at the last election. There are about 100 cases of small- pox in the pest house at Springfield, which are malatained at.@ cost of about $400 day tothecity, | ine of $10,000 each. Neither Niedringhaus or Kerens Can Win.—New Man or no Election. The R»publican fight at City goes merrily on and each faction has demonstrated its determination to hold out to the end. On the other hand the Niearinghaus men will not permit Mr. Kerens to pick the plum he has kept thelr man from enjoying while hanging tempt- ingly above his head. It is barely ‘possible that enough honest Repub- licans may become disgusted with the attitude of their party associates and vote to retarn honest old Frank ‘Cockrell to the Senate, Thatis bare- ‘\y a possibility and notatall likely to oceur. It now looks like the whole jaeasion will be frittered away with useless factional wrangling and ad- journ at the end of the five doilars a day limit without electing a senator, when the next legislature, which {fs sure to be Democratic, will have no trouble in sending a worthy succes sor to Cockrell. The last vote wae: Cockrell, 68; Niedringhaus, 66; Kerens, 12; Hill, 1, There wore four patrs in the senate and ten In the house, /ROOSEVELT SEEKS PEACE WITH SOUTH" Confederate Veterans and Wid- ows of Soldiers Appointed to Mississippi Post Offices. Jackson, Miss., Jan, 80,—Missis- sippi politicians believe that Presi- dent Roosevelt has repented his action in the Acola Post Office case, which caused much discussion throughout the South, and is now making amends to Southern Demo- crate by the appointment of confed- erate veterens and the widows of Confederate veterans and other Democrats to many post offices in this State. Daring the last few month many post offices have become vacant, and among the many appointments made by President Roorevelt there has not been a single instance re- ported in which the patrons of the post office are displensed with his choice. ° More women are in charge of post offices in the State to-day than ever before inits history, and among them are many widows of Confederate veterans, appointed since the Presi- dent began his new policy. Old soldiers who served through- out the Civil War in the confederate army have also been selected to fill offices. Democratic Post-masters have be- come numerous, and it is said that Democrats have received appoint- ments with as much and probably more frequently than Republicans. Many instances have come to light where the President has refused ap- pointments to Republicans of the “for-revenue-only class, and selected life-long Democrats in their stead. The press of the state is daily taking note of the apparent change in policy by the President, and much comment of a favorable nature has been the result. That Mr. Roosevelt has started on @ course by which he intends to! placate the Southern people, and to remove from their minds former un- pleasant occurences is the expressed belief of both Democrats and Repub- licans. Supreme Court Affirms Sentence of Machen. Washington, Jan. 31.—The Su- preme Court of the United States to- day denied the application of Machen Lorenz and Groff for a writ of certiorari in the case against them charging to defraud the government in connection with the post office department irregularities. The effect is to leave standing the decis- ion of the court of appeals of the District of Columbia, finding them guilty as changed.
