Style, Neverthe- less, Seems to Demand Them—Re- formers Find an Argument in the Heavy Skirts to Be Worn, Suspenders came near causing a re- bellion at the dressmakers’ convention at Chicago. When Mme. Eloise Hubert, who is the arbiter of feminine fashions in Boston, announced that the fashion- able woman this winter must wear sus- penders like a man every woman in the room gasped. Then the dissension came in a torrent, “Horrible!” “Absurd!” “Never! Never!” Nevertheless “suspenders” was the question of the hour and after the even- ing’s programme had been finished knots of women gathered in the corridors of the Lexington hotel and in the parlors and asked each other the question: “yall you?” Every other topic paled and the attention of every woman was riv- | eted on the new reform, The majority agreed that they would trown on the i novation, but if it becomes “swagger” end the correct thirg to do those who frowned hardest may be the first to adopt the suspenders, The leading modistes agree that strong possibility ex that these ne startling acquisitions toa woman's toilet may become this winter one of the main- stays of the gowns, whether street, house or those designed for evenir functions, that the Chicago society woman will wear, At the recent exhibi- tion of the newest things in gov . both imported and of domestic design, re- cently held at the w York fashion show, the idea of adding suspenders to women's wear as id in suppor the heavy ts which the prevailing fashions nd w advocated by a number of the fashionable modistes ot the east. Mme, Hubert has ce factured an article or : de igned and manu- pair of articles closely resembling the suspenders wort by men and these she exhibited at the convention, The idea in wearing this in vention is to use the shoulders in sup- porting che heavy shirts, thus relievi and Mps of allstrain, Whik is not a new one among re- formers, the design by Mme, Hubert i hought to be the most convenient the most practicable of any thus far in- rocuced, When a working model of the Hubert pattern was sprung on the members o! the association and the visitors a mighty murmur of disapproval arose ané welled as the purpose of the display was exvlained, This lessened, however as the spraker adjusted the new articl to a lay fis It wor! ed well eno and In about the time it take auton ‘ally to herness a horse ina fire engine house when a general alarm has beci sent in the skirt used in the demonsira tion was hitched to the lay figure, Here the murmur of disapproval dis appeared entirely and was replaced by looks of incredulity. The good points 9! the model were presented to the audi- ence and its beneficial results when worn were dilated on. ure FINDS BABY IS A NEGRO. After en Years They Retorn It te Charities Commission But Poster Mother Relents. r, Seven years ago a childless couple in Brooklyn weni to the charities commis- sioners and said they wanted to adopt a baby which they could bring up as their own. Some time later a healthy youngster was turned over to them after adoption papers had been signed. In time they realized that there was atinge of negro blood in the baby’s veins. As the child grew older the evidence of negro blood became more and more ap- parent. At last the couple decided to return the child. They it to the charities department and told the whole story to Deputy Commissioner Charles KB. Teale, with whom they left the child. This was two weeks ago. A few days later the foster mother returned and said she could not part with the child “But you knew it was not a white child,” said the aepaty commissioner. “I can’t help that,” said the woman. “Tt want her back in spite of her color.” The child was taken to her former home. took BEAUTY EXPERTS IN DISMAY. Sultan of Turkey Forbids the Use of Lard in Toilet Prep- arations, The beauty experts have had a se- vere setback in the Turkish capital since the sultan’s thirst for knowledge led him to look into the ingredients of cosmetics and pomades. Learning that a large majority of these articles, dear to the heart of woman, are mixed with pork lard, Ab- dul Hamid at once put a royal prohibi- tion upon the importation and sale of such “impurity.” He invoked the command of the koran, bidding the faithful abjure all things apperiaining to a pig. Manufacturers of soaps and other toilet articles have been notified that only such as are exempt frem all sus- picion of the unclean will be accept- able. Small merchants are buying up the unorthodox merchandise prohibited by the sultan. Money for Both, The result, says the Chicago Tribune, will be that many.excellent women will have to choose between following the fashions decreed by the dressmakers and going to the St. Louis show next | year. | Keetowah Indians Say They Will Make Troubie.
