Ma with His Soldiers Bodyguard fro the We Avoiding a great honor, a Minneap- olis missionary and his fiancee re cently were compelled to prevent the attendance of Gen. Ma at their wed- ding in Tung Cho, China. Rev. J. 8. Sherrill was the groom to be, while the bride-elect was Miss Elizabeth Sheffield. The incident throws a new light on the relations existing be- tween the missionaries and the Chi- nese officials. It is the custom in China to regard a visit made without invitation, espe- cially at some social festivity, as a greater honor than the attendance of invited guests; to come unsolicited is 8 social concession. The bride's moth- er said the problem that kept her awake nights was trying to prevent being overwhelmed by their Chinese friends. “Hobnobbing with royalty,” she wrote, “has its terrors.” By explain- ing their position to some of their na- tive friends they succeeded ‘n divert- ing the horde most to be expected. This step was averted only by Dr. Sheffield’s earnest protestations of his unworthiness to receive such an honor, and by the diplomatic aid of the interpreter, who understood some- thing of foreign customs. The gen- eral contented himself by sending the Interpreter with two rolls of white silk, two fans, two embroidered hand- kerchiefs, and two bottles of per- tumery. The next honor was even more ter- rifving and troublesome. A Chinese duchess, who is a niece of the empress, informed the ruler of the coming wed- ding plans. The dowager empress promptly sent the bride-elect four rolls of silk, light blue, dark blue, pink and olive green, In a glass case; two boxes of perfume bags, a box of five em- broidered scarfs, a toilet case of red lacquer; and what the Chinese con- sider the crowning feature of all, a fan painted by her majesty, a dainty flow- er piece with a verse of poetry and the imperial seal. The empress requested the date of the wedding, in order that she might send some one to represent her. There was nothing to do but to hope the duchess would be chosen, for, as Mrs. Sherrill said: “She has such common sense, and knows how to make herself at home with us. This proved to be the solu- tion, and she sent us word a few days before the wedding that the dowager 2mpress had commanded her to at- tend, so as to tell her all about it.” The bride had come to the notice of the empress by acting as interpreter tor Mrs. Conger, wife of the United States ambassador, at social functions. During the siege Miss Sheffield helped to care for the sick and wounded in Peking. After the siege the house of the duchess was occupied first by sol diers, afterwards assigned to some missionaries, among them Dr. Shef- fleld. i MECHANIC INHERITS FORTUNE. After exhaustive search, the author- ities have ascertained that the me- chanic, Ivan Doroschenko, was entitled to almost the whole of the fortune, which assumed colossal dimensions through the accumulation of interest. A few days ago two notaries appeared at the workshop at Kharkoff, and found young Doroschenko working hard in a corduroy suit, with bared arms, and communicated to him the Intelligence of his good fortune.
