BUT THE GAMBLERS HAD BEEN WARNED Although Detectives Had Pi Place Eariier in the Event Were Expected by the Gamblers and the Piaces Were Dark—Few Arrests Were Made. New York, Dec. 3.—District At- torney Jerome's sensational raids on alleged gambling resorts begun about midnight and continued until 4:30 o'clock this morning and numerous small places were raided. The at- tacks on the latter, however. were almost overlooked in the public in- terest, which centered in the as- saults upon the mansions occupied by Richard A, Canfield and William Burbridge, which were entered by means of ladders, axes and sledges, The police allege that Frank rell is interested, in) Burbridge’s place, Creat quantities of costly “evidence” were carted away from those places by the police but arrests were few, Up to last night the gen- eral impression prevailed that Can- field's, which is in the heart of the fashionable uptown district, only a few doors from Fifth avenue, was a “Gibraltar” which could not be ta- ken, ,A similar belief prevailed in regard to Burbridge’s place, which was especially protected by steel doors, This place is in a cross street uptown, only a half block from Fifth avenue, and a few steps from a cele- brated hotel, So great was public — interest aroused by the news of the raid on Canfield’s that people flocked to the neighborhood until the intersection of Fifth avenue and Forty-fourth street, the corner nearest Can- field's, was blocked with = carri and people. After Burbridge’s the raiders visit- ed Ludlam'’s place, otherwise known as the Savoy club, They got one man there, a colored subordinate —em- ployed about the — pls Jerome, Capt. Piper, Inspecto. ook ver: | al assistants to the district attorney | and numerous detectives were bytisy in Ludlam's place for several hours. They blew open a safe in their hunt for evidence. Early in the night District Attor ney Jerome made many raids in the down-town Italian quarter of alleged disorderly houre s. These were “pre- liminarie: as it were, to the two big events, Canfield’s and Burbridge’s, District Attorney Jerome declined ab- solutely to“make any sort of state- ment after his night’s work, The raids were expected in’ every place visited. In Cantield’s the owner declared nothing had been “doing” for weeks. It was much the same in Burbridge’s and Ludlam’s, although Joseph Jacobs, the Citizens’ Union detective, last night decitred he had played in every place. But that the raids were to be made seemed to have reached the men interested for every place waa prepared as if in ad- vance, TRUSTS RECEIVE ATTENTION.
