LOVE'S YOUNG DREAM RUDELY SHATTERED. Miss Ella Wilson of Montrose, | Mo., Killed Herself With a Shotgun. Betrothed Joined the Army—He Had Written | Her That He Intended Going to Manila to Remain Probably Three Years. Montrose, Mo , April 12.—Because | her betrothed had re enlisted in the army and declared his intention of | going to Manila, to remain probably three years, Miss Etta Wilson, 20 years old, daughter of County Judge William Wilson, living s short dis- tance north of Montrose, committed suicide last night by shooting her- self in the heart with ber father’s shotgun. Last December Virgil McCreary, ahandsome young fellow, who had jast been honorably discharged from the army after taking part in several conflicts of the Spanish-American war, arrived in Montrose to visit his brother, a merchant at Piper, imme diately north of bere. In the course of his stay McCreary met Miss Wilson. It was a cass of love at first sight. Each was attract ed toward the other. Soon they were fast friends, and not long after ward they were ardent lovers. He proposed and she accepted. Never did man and woman seem better mated, and relatives and friends of both were pleased at the prospective union. Preparations were made for the wedding, which was to take place shortly. The bride elect’s trousseau had been procured and arrangements for the ceremony were completed. There was rejoicing in the Wilson home, and apparently two youthful hearts were filled with happiness. But that happiness was destined to be shortlived. The wedding march was not to be played. In its stead the fates had decreed a funeral dirge. The church that was to be decorated with the emblems of joy was to day darkened with the symbols of sor- row. The dream of youth had, as the old adage runs, gone by contrary. 4 few days ago McCreary left the ome of the Wilsons, saying that he intended visiting relatives in North Missouri. The saparation was to be short, thought the merry bride to be, and therefore it would be bearable. No word had she from the man she worshipped that the separation would be for yearr, perhaps forever, and no thought came into her mind that his goodby might be a last farewell. But yesterday there an awakening—an awakening to the pure, young soul who had trusted in man. And the awakening proved but the sputtering of the candle of a fair young life. Miss Wilson's father brought to her from the postoffice a letter ad- dressed by Mc@reary’s hand. Jt was she blow that crushed her hopes, shatterad her dreams, wrecked her life. McCreary said that he had re enlisted in the army and was going to Manila. Biss Wilson read the letter and trembled, but, contrary to woman’s tradition, did not faint. She merely grew silent, and atear was seen to wellin her eye. She retired to her room, without mentioning to anyone the mature of the news she had re ceived. When she wasalone she planned self-destruction. It wasa desperate step, but in her despondent maod it seemed a!l that was left for her to do. Some think that her mind be eame unbalanced, and in a fit of | eommitted came insanity she the awful deed. She wrote a letter to McCreary, sealed it and requested her parents to mail i: to him. Then she is ed a brief letter to her father and mother, bidding them good-by and telling the cause of her rash act This finished, she prepared for the} finale. Securing her father’s gun, she placdd it to her heart, made sure | | Death* was | of her aim and fired. almost instantaneous Her mother hearing the report of the gun, rushed into her daughter's | room, but all was over. To-day the body ef the unfortu nate young woman was laid to rest. | Sought Death by Poison. | Macon, Ga, April 12.—Julian Ran- jgome, one of the most noted duelists | planters and financiers in the south ern states, committed suicide at Vineville, a suburb, some time last} | night, by taking morphine. When | his cervant came to wake him this | morning the Major was sitting ina chair by the side of a emall table, | dressed in evening costume, the bot- | tle of morphine on the table anda | short note lying by its side. The note explained that he was tired of | life, and was going to join hie father land mother, who, the note declared, were his only two friends. A short time ago he lost his fortune in the collapse of the Eagle and Phoenix Cotton Milling concern. Rev. John Reid, Jr. of Great Falls, Mont, recommended Ely’s Cream Balm to me.
