Spicer, an undertaker of Harrisburg, Pa, said he had dis | coyered crystalline salts ia the re-| frigerator beef in Porto Rico which} reminded him of powders used in embalming. Dr Bigelow was questioned by Colonel Davis at length with the view of counteracting the effect of the testimony of Drs. Brady, Currie | and others whoss testimony had de- clared that chemicals had been used in the preservation of the meat sup- plied to the army. The witness said he had examined both the refrigera- tor and canned roast beef and had found no evidence of the use of preservatives in either. He said he had never known formaldehyde to be used asa preservative of meat, but it was a powerful germicide. Rudolph K. Spicer, a funeral di rector and embalmer of Harrisburg, Pa, testified he was a member of the Fourth Pennsylvania regiment and served in Port Rico. He bad paid especial attention to the meat issue. The cooks had found it nec essary to cut off two or three inches of the refrigerated beef because of the greenish discoloration. “I also noticed orystalline scales on this meat,” he said. “It was gen- erally in the joints, and it immedate- ly occurred to me that some article like seda or boracic acid had been used on the meat, such as embalm- ers use on human bodies when they begin to crack.” He had eaten of this meat only once and it had made him sick. This tragedy is the culmination of one of the biggest social sensations in the history of Madison county. The affair was hushed up and the ‘friends of the men tried to prevent further trouble belongs to a good family and his brother, ex Representative W. W. Combs, exercised all his influence to prevent the ecandal from spreading. It eeems that Willoughby was in- clined to listen to his friends and did not further seek Combs, and bad they not met this morning a clash might have been averted. Willoughby bad quit carrying bis pistol, and when he strolled into the store this mcroiog be had no idea of seeing Combs. He had walked only a few steps from the door when he saw his enemy. All his hate was laroused and, seizing an ax-nandle from a box, where they were kept for sale. he rushed on the Doctor with the exclamation: “You ruined my home, you cow- ardly cur, and I'm going to kill you ad The Doctor was taken by surprise ‘| and did not utter a werd, but quickly he had better do no something wrong.
