A KIDNAPER SHOT TO DEATH BY GUARDS. Walter Hughes of Houston, Tex., Planned to Steal a Child. Riddled With Buckshot. Houston, Texas, March 18.—A corpse, riddled with buckshot, is the result of the most diabolical scheme eyer conceived in this section. Walter Hughes, carpenter and ex employe of the Southern Pacific Railway, met his death at the hands of Detec tives Ellison and Proctor. Some time ago Hughes proposed to Sol Edel, a saloonkeeper, to abduct the children of Berry W. Camp, a rich lawyer, and Frank Dunn, a wealthy pawn- broker, and to demand from the fathers a heavy ransom. According to Edel’s statement, he did not give Hughes an answer, but informed Chief of Police Heim of the the proposal which had been made to him. Under Heim’s instructions, he pretended to accept the offer of Hugees and entered into the plot, maintaining communications with the officers. Messrs. Camp and Dunn were informed of the plan. Subse- quently the scheme of kidnaping Camp’s child was abandoned. | Hughes, who came to a tragic end | last night, in order to carry out the | plan, took a cottage near the Dunn | mansion. He went so far as to dig the grave in which the abducted child should be secreted and to ar | range a repository into which the ransom should be placed. The grave in which the little one was to be buried alive was dug under ibe floor of the basement at the House occu pied by Hughes. It was covered by the floor in such a way as to prevent | detection, and near by were a lot of quilts to make the grave more com | fortable. Tin boxes were buried at a point several miles distant, into which Mr. Dunn was to be directed to place a ransom of $40,000. The plans as unearthed by Chief Heim even de veloped in most minute detail the } denomination of the biils in which | the ransom was to be paid, and an | espionage over the treasure after it was secreted meant the death of the | child. Everything being satisfactorily ar ranged, last night Hughes went to the Dunn residence to steal the! child. They were discovered by Hughes while he was trying to enter the building. Hughes fired two shots froma pistol at the oflicers, narrowly missing them, and they poured four loads of buchshot into his body, literally riddling it. On his body, besides a large pistol was found an immense knife and a box of chloroform. Hughes’ wife was put under arrest, but no charges were made against her. Free Pills 4 Send your address to H. Carson, Nev, March 18 —William Muldoon, the veteran wrestler and trainer, who was standing close to the men when the fight ended, said: “The men had clinched in the north east corner of the ring. Corbett, instead of stepping back, as he should have done, simply leaned the upper part of his body back. The movement caused the bone at the lower part of the chest to protrude. Fitzsimmors saw his opportunity, and quick as a flash delivered a right uppercut. The blow caught Cor ;bett right under this protruding bone and over the spleen. Jacksonville, Flu., March 13.— Cuban Leader Acosta made araid on the suburbs of Havana within half a mile of two block houses Wednesday | night, capturing 35 Spanish soldiers and two officers. The attack was made on the Turnpike or military |road, as it is called, one of the best | fortitied roadways on the island. The point of attack was a little hamlet where there were two large store houses containing considerable ammunition, and also clothing for the Spanish forces The two block houses were located within half a mile of the place. The Cubans dash- ed in. looted the store houses and then set fire to them. They then retreated rapidly to the right and came up in the rear of Isabella block house. The troops, seeing buildings, rushed out, leaving only asmall guard behind. The insur- gents, perceiving this managed to break in the block house door, and in 10 minutes were in full posses- sion. Knowing that they could not retain them, they looted the building of all equipments that would be valuable to them, consisting of two stands of arms and considerable am- mutition. They spiked the small field piece and setting fire to the house inside, dashed off rapidly. A BLOOD-THIRSTY BISHOP. Blow the Lynchers Into a Thousand Giblets, Says the Rev. Turner. Atlanta, Ga, March 17.—““May God give you good aim when you shoot,” is what Bishop Turner of the African Methodist Church tells his people. In the Voice of Missions Bishop Turner writes: “Let every negro in this country who has a spark of manhood in him supply his house with one, two or three guns, or with a seven or six- teen shooter, and I advise him to keep them loaded and ready for im- mediate usa, and when his domicile is inyaded by bloody lynchers or any mob, day or night, Sabbath or week day, turn loose your missiles of death and blow the fiendish in- vaders into a thousand giblets. “We have had it in our mind to say this for over seven years, but on account of our Episcopal status we hesitated to express ourselyes. So we have said it, and hereafter we shall preach it, speak it, talk it and write it. “Again we say, get guns, negroes. Get guns, and may God give you good aim when you shoot.” The Women Lost.
