Mr. Shobe is with the Singer Sewing Machine Co. and is doing well. The numbers being put on the residences look pretty. The com pany is putting them on for 250 ewch and every residence in the town should have one as it gives the place acity appearance. Elder Speck, who has been holde ing a revival at the Christian church for the past three weeks, closed the meeting Monday night. There were 38 accessions to the church. Elder Speck goes to Neosho, Mo. The following young gentlemen, applicants for appointment as cadets tothe U.S. Military and Naval Acad- emies, took examination Tuesday before the board appointed by Judge DeArmond: Jas. D. Ferrell, Cass county; C. J. Harris, St. Clair; Chas. Cunningham, Cedar; and Samuel Laughlin, Wm. Weeks, Jas. Dewey, of Bates county. Mr. Johnson Shobe, one of Bates county's most respected and venera ble citizens, celebrated his 85th an- niversary at his home, three miles west of this city, the 22d inst. The event tock the turn of a family re- union, and among the children pres ent besides those who live at home were H. T. Shobe of St. Louis, Haley and Mrs. Sallie Bailey of Rich Hill and Mrs. Mary Young of Alto- na. The spread in honor of the occasion was all that the heart could wish, and a splended good time was had. Jobnson Shobe was born near Louisville, Ky., and came to Mis- souri in 1845 and settled in Benton county, where he remained until the war broke out when he moved to Sedalia. At the close of the war he located in Saline county. Mr. S was married twice and is the father of 16 children, six by the first union and ten by the last. His son H. T. Shobe, who called Saturday, said his father is still hale and, hearty and quite active and were if not fora bladder trouble which has effected him since the war he did not doubt that he would live to the century mark. “The Mystic Order sf the Golden Fleece,” a burlesque initation by members of Odd Fellows’ lodge of this city, Monday night at the opera house was all that a critical public could ask. The stage was fitted up supposedly in lodge room order. In front of the altar was: Dragon's head, with led jaws it’s nostrils ad ‘ip and smoke during exciting in the work. At the time of the escape there} | was no one at the jail but Mrs. Col- | yer, the sheriff's wife, and hearing | }an unusual noise she surmised some- thing was going wrong and arming herself with a “pistol went to the} opening made by the prisoners and stood guard while a messenger was sent for the sheriff. Two slender, thin saws, used by gun smit).s and other workers in steel, were picked up on the outside |near the opening in the wall, evi dently dropped by the escaping pris- oners, one had been broken in two pieces. How they obtained posses |eion of these saws is a mystery. On several! different occasions in searching the cells, different articles were feund made by the prisoners to effect escape, the most dangerous of which were saws made from the steel shank of a shoe. Only a short time ago the sheriff discovered a prisoner at work on the bars with one of these improvised saws. The fellow made good progress in going through the outside layer of iron, but when he struck the steel plate his saw almost proved a failure Where promiscuous visiting is al lowed at jails it is almost impossible to guard against the handing in of tools. As for instance, a few days ago the cell occupied by Bill Taylor was searched and the finest kind of a saw found in the lining of his car- pet sachel. R. K. Graves, of Harrodsburg, Kentucky, arrived in the city Friday, and will make his home with his brother, J. T. Graves. He is about 70 years of age. J. H. McCombs, of Altona, one of the best friends the Times has in the county, called Saturday and bad his date set up to ‘97. He reports the farmers in his section up to date with their work and some of them plowing corn. M. M. Tucker, he said, hasa field up and the rows are plainly visible across the field. In speaking of the generai out look Mr. McCombs said the country never looked nicer or the prospect more promising for corn, oats, flax and wheat, and the grass was never nd from! it those | mention are | better for this season of the year, and as a general thing the farmers are happy and contented.
