Tutt’s Liver Pills SHOT TO DEATH BY A MOB. Negro Assailant and Barn-Burner Kill- ed in North Carolina,” Johnson City, Tenn., April 22.— Bob Chambers, a negro, was lynched at Cranberry, N. C, thirty-five miles east of this place, in the mountains at 3 o'clock this morning, for arson and attempted rape. He was taken from Constable G. C. Vance, who had arrested him, tied to a tree and shot to death in the most tragic manner. Last Sunday night, the buildings of the Bellevue sheep ranch were burned, but Chambers, who had been working on the place, was not sucpected. A few hours before the lynching Mrs. Jennie Wilson. whose son, Howard Wilson, is manager of the farm, awoke and discovered that the room where she was sleeping was filled with a peculiar odor. She could scarcely arouse herself. She attempted to strike a match when some one seized her. Her screams brought her son and Col. C H. Nim- son, owner of the farm,to her rescue from another room in the house. As they entered they saw a negro escape through a window. The alarm was given at once, and a posse started in pursuit. Constable Vance was notified, and, meeting Chambers, arrested him on suspicion. The mob soon learned of the arrest, and, taking the negro from the oflicer, shot him to death. | The officer had put one handcuff on | the victim's right wrist and left the other loose to lead him by. The mob pulled the loose end of the handcuff through the fork of a small tree near the roadside, and while the negro was stretcbed in this position filled him full of lead.
