Tourge, ex-postmaster at West Wil- liamsfield, O., and the present chair- man of the Ashtabula county Repub- lican committee, was arrested by the United States authorities and brought to this city and placed in jail. The specific charge against him is having a large sign displayed in front of his store, with the words “postoffice’ upon it. This is con- sidered by the postal authorities to be one of the gravest offenses that can ba committed against their laws. Mr. Tourge was appointed postmas- ter at West Williamsfield by Presi- dent Harrison and was removed two years ago by President Cleveland He coatinued, however, to operate a postoflice, selling stamps und col lecting mail, which he delivered to the mail trains. Hat-| horn was pronounced dead in five! minutes and Wade's heart ceased to| beat three minutes later. The crime for which Hathorn ard} Wade were executed was the mur der of Mrs. Hathorn on October 7} last. Hathorn had quarreled often with his wife and he determined to! get rid of her. On the day of the murder he approached Wade and of- fered him $250 anda pony to kill Mrs. Hathorn. Wade at first refus- led, but on being threatened with death he finally consented to Hat- horn’s bidding. Early in the evening Wade ap- proached the house and, meeting Hathorn, received his final instruc- tions. The negro walked around the {house toa window, through which he could see Mrs. Hathorn seated in achair. The latter arose and reach- ed for something on the mantel, thus | exposing her left side to the negro, who fired a shot gun charged with buckshot, killing the woman instant- ly. Wade was arrested and made a confession, implicating Hathorn. Both men were tried on November 20, and the jury, after being out 30 minutes, returned a verdict of guilty and the men were sentenced to be hanged today. A Household Treasure. D. W. London, Jan. 10.—No influential person in England believes there is any danger of war with Germany in the near future. Authentic advices from Berlin are unanimous that no influential person there believes cir- cumstances will arise in the near future to provoke war with England. But there is no intelligent person in England who does not recognize that the Kaiser is prepared to pro- voke war in ease of further aggres- sious by England in South Africa, and that, indeed, he is in the temper to quarrel with England on almost any valid oceasion offered him. And} England is in the mood to accept} the Kaiser’s challenge whenever it | comes. There seems, however, no probability of any immediate rup- ture, because the English govern- ment, much against its will, bas been forced by -circumstances to take action in South Africa, which | this publication, they shall be forev-| removes every shadow of opportu nity for complaint by Germany or any other nation. Other circumstances may arise next month or next year which will give the Kaiser his coveted chance, if in the meantime his present phy- sical ailment or mental spleen is not} changed for the better. But there/| is no apparent prospect of these circumstances just now.
