The friendly attitude of the United States is likely soon to be- come of great importance to Great Britain. States senators and forty-two congress-| men in reply to questions addressed to} them, whether congress should send a comm om to Cuba to look into| the condition of affairs there. They were also asked what, in their opinion, should be the condition of affairs there. The replies were received from Senators John Sherman, of Ohio; Baker, of Kan- sas; William CC. Chandler and J. Of the representatives five are from Iowa; four each from Ohio and Pennsylvania; three each from New York and Indiana; two each from Minnesota, Kentue Kansas, Texas, Missouri and Arkansas, and one each from Connecticut, Maine, Missis- sippi, Wisconsin, Louisiana, Illinois, Nebraska, Alabama and Virginia. In commenting editorially on replies, the Tribune says: ‘‘As be seen from the replies, there is a strong sentiment in favor of the dis- patch of a commission to Cuba, and also in favor of recognizing the belligerents’ rights of the insurgents as soon as it can be done consistently. There are only a little handful of members ad- verse to taking anv action and there were fifteen or more who were not yet ready to express their but the large majority of those ad- dressed declare themselves strong- ly in sympathy with Cuba and in favor of recognizing the insurgents and aiding them as far as can be done without violating interna- tional agreements. Loxpon, “ ,—A paper here to- day prints a dispatch from Hong Kong which says that at the annual exami- nation in Canton thousands of stu- dents were given copies of an imperial decree in which the doctrines of Christianity were fiereely condemned. The decree uses the following language: ‘‘A stupid, black-haired race is establishing sundry sects and they regard not their own lives, but pretend to rise again as immortal men and women. They congregate and,abandon- ing chastity, behave like obscene birds and beasts. Faithful Confucians must shoot and stone and behead them without mercy. I, the emperor, command the authorities to eradicate these weeds and vermin. Kill the ser- pents. Throw them to the wolvesand tigers, because there is no salvation for them, either against heaven-sent calamities or misfortunes caused by human agencies.” the will views, @ GRAY AT ATLANTA. -—To-day is at the exposition.
