Effect of Protection on Agriculture ‘Lo be Investigated. Washington, Feb. 16.—The house of representatives has decided that the first investigations into the oper ations of the MeKinley bill shall be lucted by the committee on ag arangement bas wy of the democrats Meus CK uttee, Chairman Hateh ttee is to be directed particularly to the effect that the high tariff has had upon the agricul- tural interests of the country. It is tood that later the; manufacturers will be | unders committee on authorized to conduct an inquiry as | to the effect of the manufacturers and skilled waye work- tarif? law on the } ecs, and thus in the end reports will be made ou the various phases of the new law by as many diferent ! mittees. Mr. Hatch. who had been pressing the agricultural investigation resolu- tion, says he regarded its adoption as the first shot tired at the McKin ley bill and believes that it will have its effect. He thinks that jan inves- tigation will show that the law has been detrimental to the agricultural interests and that the committee on agriculture will find no difficulty in| obtaining voluntary witnesses to tes- tify to the existing facts. com T Have, as You Know, een setting Bradfierd’s Fe mate Regu- | Lator for yri and have [ad a SteadiLy x demand tor it: it gives the very best satistaction: IT trequentLy seit fo physicians who use itin their prac- tice with the most satistactory resuLts. Rose of Iatan brought suit agamst the city for damages on account of injuries re- ceived by falling into a hole in a de- fective sidewalk. The doctors were unanimous in their opinion that he had received permanent injuries, and the jury awarded him $5,000. This was reduced by the judge to $2,500. An appeal was taken to the supreme court decision of lower court was affirmed. The city was finally compelled to levy tax to pay the judgment, and $1,000 was recently collected by Rose's at torneys who gave him notice. Upon receiving this notice yester- day Rose came to Atchison and sur- rendered to the sheriff, asserting and the a special taat he was a perjurer and should be punished.
