Address A Girl Who Has Eaten Nothing Since | eS aE RE AEN ET AN UNPARALLELED FAST. |THE DUCK HILL ROBBERY AR- | | | Lewiston, Me., Jan. 3.—Josephine } Christmas Day, 1881. Bedard is a pretty, dark eyed viva- | cious French-Canadian girl, who has b:en on a Christrnas visit to her un ele and cousins at 27 Birch street, L-wiston, for the past few days. If h-r story is true, she has fasted more than 2,550 days, having neith- er eaten nor desired to eat nor tast- ed food in any form for that length of time. When the reporter called upon her to-day and introduced him- self, her story as told by herself was that she was born on her father’s farm in Tingwick, a small agricultu- ral town in Canada, in 1871. Her mother was stricken with a disease which terminated fatally when Jo B¢phiue was but 3 months old. As u child she grew robust and strong. She attended a country school for a short time and afterwards assisted in the household duties at home. On Christmas day, 1881, she was violently attacked with diptheric, and for three weeks she was between life and death. From this sickness begins the date of her prolonged and curious fast, and to-day, as ier years, her means of sustenance is de rived from water only, which she drniks as people drink inilk rily. No form of eatable an arc her sleeping appetite, and the most delicious fruits are no ter her. Tn appe: height, we is of medium pounds, with a symmetrical figure, intellectual head and what is called a pretty face, with coal biac brunette of demure countenance and Kling brown eyes and short hair. She is a fascinating modest bearing. Mr. Bedare said that when in Can ada in order to remove the doubts of a few skeptical persons Josephine was locked in a room for 15 days as a test with no nourishment but wa- ter, and that she came out at the end of that time without experiencing the slightest illness. At present she enjoys perfect health, and headaches aud othor ailments flesh is heir to are entirely unknown to her. Eczema, Iteby, Scaly, Skin Tortures. Ewing, ex- consul general to Mexico, and man- aging editor of the Jefferson City Tribune, the official state paper of Missouri, is being entertained by Albany friends. Mr. Ewing it one of the bright men of the profession, aud enjoys the distinction of being the youngest man who has ever filled the important position of consul- general to our neighboring republic. He is a member of the well known Missouri family who have been prom- inent politically and socially for half acentury. In speaking of Missouri polities he said. “There will I think be no formidable opposition to the re-election of senator Vest. He has served us with great distinction and we are proud of the position he has won in the senate. I do not give credence to the rumors that impute senatorial aspirations at this time to our brilliant young Governor Fran- cis. You know he is but 38 years of age, the youngest governor in the history of the state, and an admira- ble fellow, brainy, courageous and incorruptible. He is worthy any po sition within the gift of the people. And while I think not a candidate to succeed Vest, he is a man witha fu- ture, and is sure to contradict expe- rience and outlive politically the ex- ecutive term.” The Verdict Unanimous. W. D.
