Everything points to a hard, energetic fight for Indiana, and if appearances mean anything Indiana is considered the greatest factor in the present cam- paign. Mr. Jewett, democratic chairman, said, in regard to the report that the republicans had given up New York and New Jersey, that they had at last only admitted the truth. The fight would undoubtedly be most hotly contested in Indiana, although he couldn't see why they should so soon give up two states in which the combined democratic majority some years ago was less than in Indiana alone. It showed clearly, he thought, that the republicans were weakening all along the line. When asked the reason of so many prominent demo- crats from all over the state congre- gating in the central committee rooms he said the campaign had just opened and they would now begin the work in good earnest, and then turned it off and said the men only happened to be in the city. The republicans claim to know | nothing of the report concerning either New York or New Jersey. | Secretary Delle of the state central committee said the last advices from the former state were to the effect: that it would go in their favor from 30,000 to 75,000. He said it was preposterous to claim that they had | given up hope of carrying New) York. Governor Grey most | unmercifaliy skinned Calkins four | Say Mr. Todd buys $101.55 worth of goods in one year, it must be ad- mitted that $33.80 is a pretty heavy tax to pay on that purchase. Yet it is just what he and every other farmer in Vernon county is paying to-day, under our republican pro- tection system. Yet Mr. Kimball says in opening the campaign, that the difference between the democrat- ic Mills bill and the present system of taxation, only amounts to 83 cents for Mr. Todd. In the face of this, other republican orators say the democrats are free traders. Canany mathematician figure out the con- sistency in these fellows? If it costs Mr. Todd $33.80 tax on a purchase of $101.50 worth of goods, then Mr. Kimball is mistaken when he says a reduction of 7 per cent would only save him 83 cents. Again if Mr. Kimball is right in saying that the Mills bill would only save Mr. Todd 83 cents, then these other republican orators are doing some gigantic An- anias work, when they charge the | democrats with being free traders. | Republican brethren, you can take ma you choose. If farmers paid a direct tax to the | government no man could get their votes who would advocate the pres- | ent high rates of taxation, which is bringing $100,000,000 into tne fed- eral treasury above what is necessary to run the government.
