Under a Cloud of Gloom. | Jacksonville, Fla.. Sept. 14.—Yes- i terday was but a continuation of the horrible weather of the ten days, it rained all day, and last night it | poured down as if the heavens were opened. Indeed everything was soaked, and at night a horrible com- bination of oders arises. When the sun comes out predict a great in- crease in the list of cases, probably going into the hundreds daily. The banker, knowing he was a good cus- tomer, paid the bet, giving him two dollars. The young man bet $1 on another number and won. He bet again, and won again, and he continued to win for hours and hours until he had $6,000 or $7,000, and the bank sus- pended. The young man carried the money home, and in his room searched his pockets for the quarter that had brought so much money, saying he would keep it for a luck piece. He found the coin and took it out—it was a brass button.—Atlan- ta Constitution. to play 3, Are you billious and 1 dyspeptic? Does your liver sluggish seem? Governor Hill, of New York, has taken the first opportunity afforded him since his renomination of ex- pressing his earnest desire for the success of the national democratic ticket. In an address which he made last night in response to a serenade tendered him at the execu- tive mansion, he declared it to be his sincere wish that every democrat in the state and particularly every friend of his should vote for Cleve- land and Thurman, and he expressed the hope that every independent would do likewise, whether they voted for the democratic candidate for governor or not. This disposition to thus promptly emphasize his sympathy with the administration discredits the statements which have been made by the republicans con- cerning the strained relations be- tween the president and Governor Hill, and will set at rest the rumors which have been circulated concern- ing the lack of harmony in the democratic party in New York.—K.
