iE BLIZZARD'S DEAD. Not Reported. Kugler arrived yesterday with the bay of bison Charles, who died in tbe recent western blizzard. The young mawhad settled on a ranch five miles west of Washington Springs, Jerauld county, D. T. On the worning of January 12, the weather was clear but intensely cold with snow 30 inches deep on a level. Kugler hitched his oxen to a sled aud started for a straw stack about & quarter of a mile distance to take hourne a load of straw. As he was filling his vehicle the storm came spddenly upon him and jumping down, he uphitched the cattle and ejarted forbishome. He lost his beating inthe frightful storm and aithough at one point he wandered very pear the house, his body was Zound iv a cornfield four miles dis tant. He was still standing with the hice s'ightly bent, the teeth clench- ed and both hands raised. A collar ©: ice on inch thick encircled the tlivext and those who found the bodyare of the opinion that the young man strangled to death, as there are maiks which go to show thst he had attempted to tear off the choking circle of ice. The doctor reports a terrible state of affairs existing in the territory within the tract of the recent bliz- gad, The total number of deaths, he says, will exceed 1,000, although the papers of that section are trying = s t6 suppress the facts. He himself : @aw n list of over five hundred who hiad perished, and for miles inland, i beyond the reuch of railroads and ia telegraph, there were people about whom nothing has yet been known avd whose end will probably always be a mystery. In nearly every in- étance where bodies were found the left hand was ungloved. This is ac- counted for by the fact that the eyes become blinded and often shut by the fine particles of snow, and it is to clear the vision that the hand is upgioved. H., Feb. 1.—On December 5th there was a grand hallelujah wedding in this village, at which ‘Capt. Erick Von Alexson and Capt. Polly Bryan of the Salva tion Army were married. Polly was buxom and fair to look upon, and was altogether the most prepossess ing member of the female contingent of the Salvation Army. But Polly 1s now in digrace and the cause of it 4s her bustle. Captain Polly being good looking, refused to discard her bustle when ordered by General Moore, and in consequence she and her husband have been expelled from the army and all its branches. Cap- tain Alexson and his wife Polly inti- mate that there has been some very crooked work in the Salvation Army and that they will make it hot for General Moore before they get through with him. Take the tax off of sugar and then see the benefit to the poor. In 1884 the import was 2,437,000,000 pounds; revenue, $48,740,000, In 1886-87 consumption 2,900,000,000 pounds; revenue, $58,000,000. Let us see what this means to the masses. seventeen pounds of sugar can now be bought for $1. This is nearly six cents per pound. Take cff the tariff and it gives us over one-third more, making nearly 26 pounds for a dol- lar. This is one article alone of those set forth in Cleveland's message. Now Blaine’s side: Would taking the tax off of whiskey and tobacco benefit the masses? Woulda cigar be cheaper than a nickle or a drink of whiskey be less than ten cents? Admitting for argument sake, they would, the next questioa is, would it bevefit the masses, the women, children and poor of this country? Chicago, Feb. 1.—A large number of recent petty robberies in the vicini- ty of Woodworth avenue and twenty- ninth street was explained on Mon-| day night by the unexpected discov- | ery of the neaiquarters of a gang of | boy thieves located under a sidewalk | by two officers from the Thirty fifth | street station. On going to investi- gate a mysterious light under the sidewalk they found s small entrance to s cave in the ground, andon pur- suing the search came to 4 spacious room guarded by a 13-year-old Jack Sheppard named Jimmy Dynes. “Who goes there?” followed by the sharp clicking of a revolver, greeted the officers as they were about to enter the cavern, and their quickness probably saved their lives for on getting inside they found yound Dynes with a revolver in hand and ready to uphold the dignity of | the gang of which he was an officer. Inside a curious spectacle was be- fore the officers. Revolvers in great profusion hung about the prepared walls, backed by a huge musket which glistened brightly in the light thrown out from an old “salamander” stove in one corner. The walls were picturesquely decorated with sensa tional prints and a notice signed in red ink related the fact that “Tough | Jimmy” was captain of the crowd and that “Billy the Kid” officiated as lieutenant. To the threats of sum mary vengeance to traitors was sigu- ed the hair raising names of “Light- ning Eddy,” “Peanuts” “Jumbo,” “Oysters,” “Chumpy,” and “Ding Doc.” The youthful cave dweller in charge told the officer he was awaiting the arrival of some of his comrades, but they failed to put in appearance. At the station the boy finally confessed to a complicity in several robberies perpetrated by the gang of which he was a member.
