PRESENCE OF MIND. Determined by What We Actually Do in Time of Peril. It is not what you and Ithink we would do if our house should take fire, or our boat begin to sink, or « high- wayman confront us, or an earthqiike yawn beneath us; it is rather what we actually do when we are in the thick of such peril that deter-nines our pres- ence of mind. There are ne persons so remarkably level-heaute! as thuse who are free and easy, out of reach of danger. The other day I heard a story of an- usual presence of mind. It was told me by one who had himaelf received it from an officer of one of the great railroads that orosa the Alleghany mountains. “There,” suit the officer to my in- formant, as both were going about s great, central station, where cars and locomo:ives were ma'e, repaired and kept, “there is the very man. If he wants any favor of the road, he has only to ask for it. The rest of us come and go; but be stays, and may stay, service or no service, till death removes him. The road is grateful tohim. and will always hold him in honor.” Many years have eiapsed since the incident happened; many more since the telling of the tale to my friend. The details and the coloring vary sofhewhat as they pass from mouth to mouth”*;No doubt, when you have finished the story, you willsay: “Why, that was the very thing 1 would have done myself.” Bat wou'd you have done it? Much of ths way was little more than a shelf cut into the mountain sides, with rising walls of rock on one hand, and {deep ravines on the other. And far up among the mountains, often on the opposite sides of huge and gloomy chasus, the observant traveler would catch glimpses of what s-emed to be curves a den bankments of anoth yr rouwd. The en- and the train was left lagging behind. “Now jump for your lif-!" There w.s no tine fer parley. The fireman leaped, fell, and scrambled to his feet again. Then the engineer pat on full steam. Freed from its burd«n of coaches the oclomo- tive responded at once. “Now fight the battle for u:f" ex claimed the engineer aa he sprang from the sepa Hs quick eye bad chosen a favorable spot on which te alight. Though thrown headlong with some force, he wason his feet proniptly enough to ace hie train roll by at lessening s;o2d, under ibe full control of the faithful brakemen. That something seri-us had hap- pened or was abont to occur began to be clear to the passengers. Que or two had seen the fireman jimp, two or three, the engineer; snd larger numbers from the car windows had caught anatchye of men that, soiled and bruiecd and dag~d, were trying to rise to their teet Ly the sile of the track. All was excitement and tumult. Some began to leap from the ears. Fortunately there was litle danger now, for the motio: of the train had nearly cease. Up the track, meanwhile, went the iron menster to meet the foe alone. Down the track, into fall s git, came ” the wild freight cars with a speed so great that they almost rose from the rails as they rounled the curver N-arer and ne-rer, the speed of each increasing. Tl.en they flew at exeh other in a mighty, tiger-l-ke rage, as if there were blood to be shed and nerves to be tern asunder. The crash shook th: hills. A great, roaring cl ui of steam burst inte the air, while another of dust aul debris boiled up ad mingled confasedly withit. Then the shattercd ends of ears shot out here and t smok», and a grinding, erack rose up. Quiv-ring in the ment, it reeled, and then went crash- ing down the en bankment inte the ; ravine below. When the steam and dust cleared away, there were the deep, ugly furrows in the roadbed, and the splintered tie and the Tent | ard broken rails, and the nameless fragments of an utter wreck, to mark the scene of the fi ree e counter. The gallant engine was a hopeless ruin; but it had done a nob'e service. It had fought a battle in which hun- dreda of lives and untold interests were nt xe, and it had won it. Not a life of that precious come pany was lost, not a member of it hurt by so much a3 a serach Be- fore they saw their peril, they were rescued from it; and vet their rescue had hardly been completed before the full and awful nature of that peril burst upon them, and. stirred them iu the’r inmost being. With tears of joy and gratitnde they blessed the engineer whose quick’ wit and daring plan and ing ant exe- cution had raved them from a faic that at ene moment ft seemed beyond human power to avert. And to the poor locomotive that lay dismembered and useless on the rocks be'ow, there went out a kind and tender feeling, as if, in giving its life to save others, it hal shown something akin to the love and bravery and sacrifico of a noble human soul.—Frank A.
