OS TCS SE THE OCTRO! Curious Devices for Defranding Cities of Custom Duties. Uniler the guidance of our cicerone we began an inspection of the curiosi-« tics about us, and remarked with as- MUSEUM. — PAPER PRODUCTION, Methods by Which the Best and Most Dur = “Els qeailey bmeae. To properly mix fibres we must know the way they combine to pro- duce paper, and the qualities which tonish' ent among them an enormous | Bey should possess to that end Ig block «f white marble which must have required almost superhuman Strength to move, to say nothing of the cost. We turned inquiringly to our guide. who smiled and asked us t toch the block of Carrara with our fingers. We obeyed, and imagine our surprise to find that the enormous Mass weighed less than a bundle of feathers! Its history is as follows: A freight train arriving one day from Italy, and carrying six such squares of marble, & custom~douse officer re marked an unusual indentation in one of them, and, suspecting that some. ting was wrong, had the bright idea was @ generally aecepted idea until very lately that the fibers of the paper sheet close or lock together in the same way as animal hair in felt At the beginning of this work even, paper is described as a felted sheet. Dr. Worster sent us st the beginning of the present year the following com- muodieation, from which it would ap- pear that paper is not felt tn the | hitherto acceptation of the word, but simply “a confused mass of fiber.” Here is what Dr. Wuster says: “However great progress may have been made in telling what paper is, we have yet no correct explanation of to break off a corner with the aid of a the origin and nature of the BSEee hammer, when, miracle! the marble Was shect iron and hid 25,000 france of course to consider paper as a felt | Werth of Venice lace! Here in this corner is a pile of logs, rexdy, to all appearances, for the fire. sheet. It has become a matter of fibers, although at the beginning of the century the discoverer of the na- tare of the felting of animal fibers é objected most decidedly to calling oo acd Paper a felt. Un- fortunately the peasant omitted tc change his fraudulent vegetable at the end of the pumpkin season, and it was Giscovered one day filled with cider Drandy.”” As our interlocutor spoke we stopped, much puzzled, before an or- dinary-looking coffin, on which wat pasted a railroad bulletin. “Ah!"? said our friend, suddenly, “you notice that curious object from Marseilles? During the cholera epi- Wemic of 1884 the employes of the ad. @inistration noticed a cart on which was @ coffin covered with a heavy pall pass the gate every day. The men uncovered respectfully before this vic. tim of the terrible disease, and drew back, holding their noses out of feat of the microbes Time passed, the Cholera aleo, and still the cart, with {te sad burden, made its appearance @aily at the same hour. This regular. ity aroused suspicion at last, and, the fear of contagion having flown with the cause, one of the guards lifted the Pall and discovered, not a corpse, bui ® mummy composed of cigars.’’— Paris Figaro. . On receipt of 30 cents, in two cent stamps, we will send to any address the by pressure and motion, making the felt thicker and smaller in its dimen- sions, are lacking in paper fibers. Merely placing dry paper fibers on one another will not make a shect of Paper, as can be easily seen by using dry rag fiber or lint Neither wili short-cut wool or silk filaments make a sheet of any strength. The capacity for producing a consistent sh-et of paper belongs solely to those fibers whieh lose their elasticity in water xs they become softer, but recover tha quality again in drying. In the mois:- ened state the ductile fibers, ailed by the shaking, settle down in all di- rections and form a confused fiber mixture. In drying, every fiber grad- ually recovers its original form and elasticity, and the individual fibers exert a certain pressure on each other. The longer the fibers and the more intricate the mixture of the fib«rs when wet, the stronger will be the sheet of paper when dry. When wet, or when its fibers have lost their elasticity by heat, paper ean noi be drawn in every way like felt, in which each hair is, so to say, anchored to an- other by its scales. A sheet of paper must no longer, therefore, be desiz- nated as a felt, but as a confused mixture of such fibers as are soft and pliable when moist, but hard and elastie when dry. The greater the shaking together of the wet fibers in both directions of the wire the firmer and stronger will be the sheet. The shorter the fibers the less pliable will they become with water, as in the case of ground wool, and the less will be the pressure which individual fibers exert on each other, and the more brittle will the paper sheet turn out. Every strange material mixed with the fibers, and then placed between them In the formation of the shee, prevents them from lying cluse tqgeth- er, thus lessening the solidity of th: paper. We shall speak of the results of experiments in this line with sizing, mineral loading and ground wood in future issues —Praktisches Handbuch. 0 Drunkenness or the Liquor Habit Positively Curea by administering Sr, Haines’ Gelden Specific. Tue Inpiana Cuumicat Co a 10-1yr Crawtordsville, Ind How Volapuk Sounds. Much as Ihave heard and read about Volapuk, the new language which M. Schleyer hopes to make uni« versal, Inever heard it talked until last wéek, when, among the guests at the hospitable table of a well-known medical man of literary tastes, there Were two guests who had actually sat at the feet of the inventor of Volapuk, so to speak, und started that tongue under his personal direction. To oblige the rest of us, these two visitors —one was a Russian and the other a cosmopolitan—engaged in a conversa. sion in Volapuk for our edification. F would rather not write !own in black and write my impression of w hat I heard. One of the guests suggested that Volapuk sounded like double Dutch spoken by a Choctaw Todian suffering from a chronie croup, whilo another suggested it was ore like a Welshman trying to cough in) modern Greek; but it must not be supposed that I indorse their evidently exagger- ated statements. Serionsly, however, I do not think that Volapuk sounded like the universal language of the fut- ure, though I must say that many of its words seem taken from roots com- mon to our own and the German lan- guage —London Figaro. ——- o> __ Bucklen’s Arnica Salve.
