Sheiburne, N.$., Sept. 13.—The | schooner, Willie McGowan, from Ban- quero, arrived here this afternoon and reported that a fishing vessel, adrift, had been boarded some days previously and th- bodies of several | men had been found floating in the cabin. The vessel was drifting help- lessly about at the mercy of the ele- ments. The bodies were in a de- composed state. The remainder of the crew had evidently abandoned the craft some time before or else | had been lost. The flesh on the head of one of the drowned men had | been eaten nearly ail away and all the bodies presented a horrible sight. The schooner is believed to be the Ocean Bride of Boston. TERRIBLE LOSSES IN THE GALE. Halifax, N. S., Sept. 13.—St. Pierre, advices state that disasters which occurred during the recent great gales on the Banks, are still being reported daily. The schooner St. Pierre passed there bottom up. Her crew of sixteen men had all been lost. Vessels belonging to the French cod fishing fieet heard from ; up to the present time report a loss of fifty lives. One hundred vessels had been badly damaged and have been withdrawn from the fisheries, thus losing the September fishing. This will decrease the season’s catch 20,000 quintals. Social Amenities. “Is that family that has moved in next door neighborly?” asked one Sioux Falls woman of another. “Yes, they appear to be. They've borrowed flour of me twice, tea once and sugar three times. Then they have got our coffee pot and one tub, and the hatchet and two lengths of stovepipe and the baby carriage, and the woman empties all her slops over the fence in our yard, and I see her coming across now to hang her clothes on our line.” “[ shouldn’t think you would like to have them borrow things so much and act quite so free.” “Oh, I don’t worry much about it. We've got their mop and about half of their dishes and their rolling pin and washing machine, and the other day I borrowed ten sticks of wood from them, and each afternoon our hired girl puts on better clothes than the woman has to her back, and walks up and down on the sidewalk, and tonight I'm going to put out poison for their dog. Oh, we're getting along very nicely, and I think they are going to be very pleasant neighbors. This always was a splen- did neighborhood.”—Dakota Bell. A Sound Legal Opinion. He did not hesitate, but replied, off-hand: “Its all right, | and Cleveland is a safe man. His veto of the pension bills blocked a | pernicious move.” When people reflect who Simon ; Cameron is the significance of this | brief utterance becomes fully appar- ent. If in these modern times ary |man can be said to bea Nester to | his party, Simon Cameron occupies | that mythological relation to the Re- | publican party. He was a compam tively old man when the party drew its first breath. He served Pennsyl- | Vania in the United States senate as | a democrat before republicanism hid been evolved from the circumstances | that presaged the war of the rebd- lon. Having cast in his lot with the new party he was re-elected io | the senate as a republican in 1853. He was secretary of war for sx months under Lincoln, and taka from the war office to represent the United States at St. Petersburg. His son, Don, is still the leader of the strongest wing of the repubi- can party in Pennsylvania and the sea ior senator from that state. Therefore, when Simon Camera says the administration of Cleveland is all right, it means something more than the approval of a friendly critie. Republican managers throughout the country might as well take notice that there are hundreds of serious conservative members of their own party throughout the country, who, deeming Cleveland, “a safe man,” w ll require real issues and a candi- date of sterling character to induce them to seek a change. Mere parti- san advantages will not warrant a change.—Chicago News. A fortune-teller can hit a woman's case nine times out of ten. “You've had sickness and trouble. You'll have some property fall to you. You do not have full confidence in your husband. Beware! He is deceiving you. You have a very gentle nature. Everybody loves you. You have had trouble with a relative. It was not your fault. Beware of a blue- eyed woman with a mole on her left cheek. She will make you trouble. Good-by—one dollar—call again. He Should Have Lied. “If I'd been little George Wash- ington I'd lied about cutting the cherry tree,” he said as he laid down his school history. “You would!”’ exclaimed the moth- er. “And why?” “Well, then it would have been laid to the hired man.” “And then?” “And then there'd have been the all firedest fight between him and the old man Washington anybody ever saw. Little George was way off on that cherry tree business.”"— Detroit Free Press. One Man’s Ingratitude. A mad-dog attacked Mrs. Henry Biekle near Louisville, and William Eichen, a young, newly landed Ger- man employed by Biekle, went to her rescue and strangled the brute, but not before his hands and arms had been badly bitten. As soon as Biekle learned that the dog was mad and that Eichen might have the hy- drophobia he promptly discharged the young man who had saved his wife’s life; and the poor fellow, without money or friends, was ad- mitted to the hospital.—Louisville Courier Journal. The other horn got in under a fore leg of the ‘gator, and the “gator, getting a front foot of the bull in its mouth, they became locked and rolled and tumbled fear fully. They got into the water again, where after a brief struggle both expired. An ingenious visitor at a seashore resort occupied his leisure moments by catching jelly-fish. Having learned of some of the cures effected by Athlophoros I bought some for her. [ think it was four or five bottles she used, since which time she has been entirely well of both rheumatism and neuralgia. As she was a very great suflerer I consider Athlophoros a very efficient remedy in curing such a case.” W. C. McClain, clerk for Smith & Bone- steel, Druggists, Atlantic, Iowa, says. “I havetried everything I knew offor my rheu- matism, but nothing did me any until I used Athlophoros, it was in July 1884. I was confined tothe house for over a month, and was obliged to use crutches. I suffered with this rheumatism for about a year.
