Ct ' With Barglary —<o-2-0- For the past two or Butler has gang ot petty thieves burglaries and house-robbing has taken place, and although the ras- cals were spotted and every effort was being used by our officers 10 catch them they safely eluded arrest three been | Jas until Thursday when Franklin and Fred Jones were | nabbed on the glanzing | Newport Owens’ grocery store in the | east part of the city, on Sunday of | last week. Franklin has been under arrest on similar and | several times before, but by | hook or crook managed to escape | justice. He 1s one of the most no- | torious scoundrels out of the peni- | tentiary and it heghad his just deserts he would have been there long ago. According to Jones’ story this night prowler, Franklin, has not confined his develment to himself, but has been the main instigator in persuad- ing other boys to share with him in his thieving. The charge on which the two are arrested, Jones says, was concocted by Frnklin and committed by him. His story is that they met at the east school building and Franklin suggested the matter to him and the two went the store and while he stood at the front fence Franklin went in at the window out the articles which are too numer- ous to mention. Jones was then requested to take them home with him, peddle them out and divide the preceeds. Jones says he objected to selling them in Butler on the grounds that they would be caught, when Franklin totd him to go ahead and if he was caught he (Franklin) would stand it. Jones took the things home and_ hid them der the bed, and sure enough the sale of a knife was the cause ot their detection. He fessed up hke a itt- tle man, after being arrested, and told the whole story trankly and honestly, and, in doing so, proved himself to be a hardened little sin - ner, and Franklia a bold, bad, dan- gerous thief and burglar. The other boy arrested is John Medley, break- ing Bennett, other charges some and handed un- on a of into the store of Wheeler & Co., on the Medley was also arrested on intor- ky Jones, claims to have been with him on the night of the robbery and claims that Medley broke out the window and he (Jones) pulled out the pistols, two im number. Medley denies the charge, but will be held to await the action of the grand jury. However, there no doubt but that there are others in terested in these robberies and the officers have them spotted and itis | thought will have sufficient evidence in a short time to take them in. Monday a search warrant was sworn out and placed in the hands of constable Trimble sheriff Glazebrook forthe purpose ofsearch- j ing the effects of one Cummings who has been stopping at the house of a and widow woman by the name of Hull, in the neighborhood of the depot. Cummings has been laying around town for a long time with no visible means of support, and it was thought he was connected with the petty thieving which has been going on in town for several months. Nothing was found, however, in his effects, and as he was making ready to skip the town it is hoped he will not be further detained. As soon as the officers entered the house Mrs, Hull put up a poor mouth and began to enquire what would become ot her as she was in a helpless condition and out of grub, and while she was talking one ot the officers reached under the bed and pulled out a box which contained upwards of 100 pounds ot choice smoked side meat and the kitchen revealed a sack and a half of flour and other things in the eating line in proportion. ‘The greatest curiosity in the way of coffee that has come under our observation is that African Java at Ed.
