A DANGEROUS WOMAN. os Her Faculty of Changing Her Appear- ance While “Shoving the Queer.” ——eo Secret ervice Detective in Detroit Free Press. In January, 1363, the secretary of the treasurer was notified that a new and dangerous counterfeit on a Cin- cinnati National Bank had been put afloat in Boston. The detective bu- reau being notofied in tura | was de- tailed on the case and left for Boston the same day. About $2,000 ot the queer had been floated in one day, errand. She gave me a terrible tongue-lashing and called on the passengers tor protection, but when 1 revealed my identity and emptied the contents of the satchel on a seat, she gave in. We got off at Steub- enville, and, when I had her search- ed, over $4,000 in the counterfeits chases were not to be found, she haying slipped them to confederates. She was the wife of the no oricu “Black Dan,”’ and the pair were the most dangerous couple in America at that time. Each victimized party described her differently. she was a blonde, plainly dressed. At the next she was a brown- haired woman in mourning; at the third she had black hair, was showily dressed and claimed relationship to a rich tam- ily. After a day spent in taking notes and making deductions I came to the conclusion that there was only one woman in the case, and that she had assumed disguises. Boston was thor- oughly searched tor her, and I had not yet found a clew when the chief telegraphed me that she had appear- ed in Philadelphia, I reached that city to find she bad purchased $1,- 600 worth ot diamonds at one place and $800 worth at another, paying, of course, in the counterteit bills. The first jeweler described her as a showy woman with gold in her up- per front teeth. The second jeweler described her as very plain and de- mure, and he was sure she had no gold in her teeth. I had set out under the belet that Thad only one woman to deal with, and I would not admit there were two. I looked Philadelphia high and low for females bearing the de- Scription, and at the end of four days received another telegram trom head- quarters. She had appeared in Pitts- burg, where she had made three dit- ferent purchases of jewels. I has tened to the Smoky City as soon as possible, and lo! the three different descriptions given were so entirely different that one was almost sure there were three women at work floating off the counterteits.
