MADE THE HAIR FLY. A Bough and Tumble, Hair-Pulling, Eye-Gouging Fight. The ladies of the Garfield ledge, Knights and Ladies of Honor, hada very warm and animated meeting yesterday afternoon at Druids’ hall. In fact the adjectiyes ‘‘warm’’ and “‘animated”’ convey but a taint idea of the red-hot time that they ex- perienced. This particular Garfield lodge is a benevolent insurance or- ganization, and at the meeting yes- terday among the routine business to be transacted was the settlement of some benefits that were due cer- tain members. The ladies proceed- ed with business, but somehow the sheets did not balance, and it was apparent there was a screw loose some place. They argued and in- vestigated, and as matters only be- came turther entangled the more they proceeded, they grew hot around the dress collars aad called each oth- er hard names just like bold bad Politicians. Mrs. Goebel, the treas- urer, was subjected to some harsh criticisms and she retaliatsd in the same line un her opponents. From words, the ladies of the Garfield lodge, like the ‘Society upon the Stanislaus,’ peeled their wraps and appealed to muscle. Mrs. Goebel led out with her right and caught Mrs. Wienhazgen under the left ear. Mrs. Annie Thomas banged Mrs. Goebel in the jaw and the treasurer, being a lady of high temperment, could not brook such treatment, so she reached down on the floor, so it 1s alleged, and picked up a spitton and dashed it at the head of her op- ponent. It struck one ot the ladies and she smiled a sickly sort of smile and curled up floor. The tall of the gallant warrior produced a panic in the line of females drawn up in battle array, but it was only for an instant. filled and the fight went on. hair was scattered about pro- fusely as the leaves of Vallambrosia. Science was discarded and the com- bat descended to a question of mere physical prowess. Mrs. Goebel was backed by a hard-fisted contingent, and she was slowly but surely gaimn- ing the victory, the opposition having never entirely recovered from the havoc produced in their ranks by the sudden and unlooked for debut of cuspidor. Finally the ladies were parted bv a horrid man, and gathering up their torn and gory garments the Mmes. Wieshagen and Thomas, with their triends, proceeded to the dispensary, where a number of ugly scalp wounds in their heads were dressed. The ladies next went to the Four Courts with the intention of getting out a warrant against Mrs. Goebel. Mr. Dierkes was not in and they vowed they would return in the ,norning. -_— 4@ssurences From Kelly. on the Her place was quickly False as A Prominent and influential Indi- ana democrat, a personal triend of Mr. Hendricks, called upon Mr.- John Ker'ly yesterday afternoon. In the course of the interview Mr. Kelly said: ‘‘When you return to Indiana I want you to say to Mr. Hendricks for me that Tammany hall will Prove as true to the national democratic ticket as the needle to the pole. The charge that the hall proposes to sell out Cleveland by making a deal to elect our county ticket is intamously false. I have Personally pledged my honor to Goveraor Cleveland that he should have my earnest and cordial support, and he shall. Let them say what they please, but I never violated my personal pledge in my life. There has been a won- derful improvement developed in this city and state for Cleveland within the last two weeks. It is Surprising. The Ohro election has only had the effect to stir up the democrats and make them more de- termed. This state will go tor Cleveland and Hendricks, and Tam- many hall will contribute 50,000 Votes to the triumph. Say this to Mr. Hendricks for me, and tell him that he need have no tear of Tam- acim or the result in New York Kelly is a beautiful talker, | and his face glowed with an honest | and earnest expression while he} made the above pretty little speech. | I believe he is honest in his purpose | and will trust him through good and | evil report until the close of the polls. Oil en Troubled Waters. The time is fast approaching when the now rising generation will won- der at the folly of having ever nge- lected such a means ot salvation, tor the mass of evidence on this sub- ject which has recently accumulated has now compelled attention from the most skeptical, and the experi- ments so successfully carried out on the stormy coast of Aberdeenshire, at the harbor of Peterhead, have borne fruit far and near. Some of the fishers, who had witnessed them, remembered them to good purpose when trying to enter the harbor of Stonehaven, and warned of their danger by the white-crested waves raging on the bar. They had with them.only a little colza oi! and a little paraffin tor their lamps (vegetable and mineral oils), so little that most men would have deemed it mere folly to cast such upon tempestous waves. But these men had profited by their lesson. One man stood on either bow and, just asthe boat ap- proached the raging surf, they slow- ly poured out their offering to the waves, which, as if by magie, ceased to break, and rolled on in harmless green billows, which carried the boat safe into port. I have also just heard trom Cornwall that a party of Cornish fishers who chanced to be at Aberdeen at the time of the ex- periments and there witnessed the stilling of the waters, returned to their own granite-bound coast with the conviction that they had seen something which hereafter it may be well for them to practice. Now. thanks to the same large-hearted and energetic Scotchman who planned and brought into practical working the oil-breakwater at Peterkead, the men of Kent can tell with wonder of its apphcation to their own harbor of Folestone and are eye-witnesses of how quickly, on a very stormy day, a few gallons of oil have calmed the breaking waves and made the harbor smooth and sate. The Londcn pa- Pers, in reporting on these experi- ments. have stated the general belief that, by the simple use of oil, en— trance and egress to the Folestone harbor may henceforth be absolutely secure in the severest storms.—Pop- ular Science Monthly.
