Some of The Celebrated Detcctive’s | Great Work. ! Of George H. Bangs, the general | superintendent of Pinkerton’s vari- | ousdetective agencies, who died in | Roselle, N. J., on Thursday, Robert | B. Pinkerton said to-day:’ “Mr. Bangs was braye and cool, and aj detective. There was splendid nothing rash or flash about his work. He made a philosophical study of every case. It was his special de light to get hola of thieve’s messages mcipher. He never let go of them till he had unravelled them. His first great case was the detection of the Adams Express robbery at Moni- gomery, Ala. ‘he amount involv- ed was $10,000. the messenger, as a hole was found in the pouch, but Bangs made up a} package ot $40,000, and found it would not go through the hole, so he | concluded that it had never got imto the pouch, and began to shadow the superintendent. He shadowed him fora year, and then arrested him Suspicion fell on} with the money in his _ posses- sion. Knowing that the clerkf}was careless, the superintendent had not thrown the package in the pouch, but had pretended todo so, and then had kicked it under the counter. “Mr. Bangs managed two other express robberies for the Adams company, both on the New Hayen railroad. That which occurred near Coscob is a famous case. The rob- bers discovered that the messenger in charge had a habit of going into the smoking-car to warm his feet. One night when he was absent from his post they shoved the safes off the train and got away with some $300,- ooo, nearly all of which Mr. Bangs recovered. “He also captured Marsh and Bullard for the Merchant’s Umon Express cempany robbery. These criminals *afterwards escaped trom the White Plains jail. In short, no great express or bank robbery has occurred here in the last 25 years which he has not ‘managed,’ as we say. Like many other brave men, he had luck. He once captured a French swindler in Canada and se- cured him by a_ hand-cuff to his wrist. In the train the swindler fell asleep, ‘and Mr. Bangs being nearly exhausted, also went to sleep, not- withstanding his efforts to keep awake. When the train reached Fonda he awoke. The swindler was still beside him, but the next time he awoke the Frenchman was not there. Inquiry of trains showed that the train hadslowed down at a point out of Fonda, which had been left about half an hour before. The trainwas stopped for Mr. Bangs, who ran back to Fonda. On apply- ingatthe principal hotel he was told he would have to share a room with another guest. On entering this room, who should he find sound asleep on tne bed but the French- man. He threw himself down be- sidehim, and when the awoke Mr. Bangs was him, ° swindler smiling at The north republican press does Not conceal its disgust for its former favorite, Mahone.
