DRURY COLLEGE. One, of the Fin«st Struetures in the! Bouthwest Reduced te Ashes. Springfield, Mo., December 12.— Stone Chapel of Drury College lo- cated on Benton. avenue, in the northwest part of this city, and the finest structure im southwest Mis- souri, took fire atew minutes be- fore ten o’clock this forenoon, and within two hours was completely'de- stroyed, leaving only the charred and ruined walls standing. At the time the fire was “discovered there were 175 students in the recitation room on the first floor. Demuth Lippman remarked to a fellow stu- dent, W. R. Murry, ‘who attended to the furnace fires with which the building was heated, that he smelled fire trom somewhere, and the two immediately proceeded to the fur- nace from in the basement on the north side. On opening the deo: the flames and smoke burst forth. The fire-bells were at. once rung, andin a few moments the fire company and at least two thousand * citizens were on ground; but with no water works and no Water aear enough to be utilized it was imposssible to do “anything to save the magnificent building and our people could only look on with gloomy faces and wit- ness its destruction. In a brief space_of time the flames leaped out of the windows in the -upper story, and. soon the entire roof was a sheet of fire. At 11330 the greater} portion of the west end wall fell in with a fond crash, while the flames’ enveloped the splendia tower that contained the bell. By noen the fire fiend bad done its work, and all that remained ot the handsomest and costliest structure in the South- west was a mass ot red hot coals and embers, surrounded by the charred and cracked walls. A small frame building immediately north of the chapel‘ which was used as_ the con- servatory of music shared a similar fate, and but for the energetic ef- forts of the citizens and students, who kept the old college building, which stood some yards awav, cov- ered-with wet. cloths and dripping water, it doubtless would have been included in the ruins. By timely work tho pianos, organs and other mausica! instruments and some of the scheol furnitures were saved. Dr, N.J. Morrison, President of the college, got his whiskers considera— bly singed while taking out some of the apparatus. Col. Boone Secures His Valuable Gold Watch. Clinton Democrat. All old residents of the county > will remember that Col. Boone was presented an elegant gold watch and chain by members ot the Twen- ty-Eighth Assembly, as a token ot their appreciation and esteem, at its adjournment, March 29, 1875. He had served very acceptably as Speak- er otthe House for the session of 1874-’75, and this token of friend- ship by his admirers was greatly prized.- The watch bore an appro- priate inscription, and was valued at $300. In May 1880, Col. Boone attend- ed a Democratic State Convention at Moberly, to send delegates. to the Cincinnati convention. Several rob- beries were committed during the sitting of the conventiea, and among these who suffered was Cel. Boone who had his watch stelen trem his Foemat the Grand Hotel. No itive clue was obtained until last week when he received a letter from Jno. W. Campbell, Chief of Police, St. Leuis, asking him if be had lest such a watch, and if so to send him a tull description. Chief Campbell, in the meantime, had seen Hon. John I. Martin, in St. Louis, who recognized the watch es Cel. Boone’s, he being in Jefferson City whenat was presented. Yesterday morning it was received by express in good order, and the Col. 1s one of the happnest men in the State. The chain was not secured. This was an clegant piece ef ship, and adorned with a ~ mal- let which alone cost $15. i The watch was secured in Chi- i cago through Pinkerton’S Detective | Agency, from a pawn broker, who | held it for $39.50, advanced to a! thref.
