A BIRD DINNEE. Annual Frolic cf Kentucky Statesmen in the Woods- Correspondence ot the Louisville Com | nercial. Atypical Kentucky scene was the | annual bird dinner of the Sportsman club at Eminence to-day. see justsuch an assembly of Ken- tuckians enjoying themselves after just such a Kentucky fashion. The best element in the state, the ablest politicians, the best speakers, the cleverest anecdote tellers in this or any .other State, were all there and they spent the time after the manner of the old days. The spot selected tor the dinner loeked lake the picture from a noyel. It was about a mile back of Eminence, nashady httle hollow, with great oak and walnut trees looking away like sentinels over the undulating field and meadow, dotted with herds of fine cattle and horses. Be- meath one of the sentinel oaks a dozensmiling, chattering blacks had built an immense fire, and healthy were the oders that came from a certain black cauldron of ‘‘burgoo’’ that boiled and bubbled over this fire. A fine spring of water sparkled away througe the grass and tts little stream wound its way around among the trees. From about the fire there came up the sound of laughter and wild regro melody, and as each bug- gy drove up the occupants were greeted with bushful bowing and scraping by the younger darkies and respecttul bows by the oldcr ones. The day could not have been finer. the sun never shown warmer, the air never felt balmie:; 1t was a May day in November, with nothing to remind one of Winier save the changing leaves and here and there a withered patch of blue grass. T.ne crowd was alarge and a remarkably characteristic one. It 1s doubtful it just such acrowd as gathered about under these old trees could have been collected in any other State in the Union. -Four-fifths of those present were six feet and over, and ther free and easy manners would paralyze a more fastidious people than Kentuckians. Sut the most characteristic thing on the ground is that long, broad table with glasses spread along it here and there in the most reckless con- fusion, and these tall, overshadowing bottles filled with 20-year old bour- bon—fit drink for strong tellows clinking these glasses and draining without visible effect a bumper that would send to grass the sturdiest old Saxon that ever kicked his heels under Altred’s round table. Do you see that big muscular fel- low there leaning against this table with the crowd of men around him, slapping him on the back and familiarls calling him ‘Jim ?’? Well, | that’s no less apersonage than James | a frolic and a@ good time in the healthy and you will presently see when any fun is started that he enjoys it just as hugely as any one on the and you may notice that looking gentleman with his broad- brimmed hat turned up on one side like a Spanish bull-fighter, mustache twisted out to B. J. C. S. Blackburn. Just now he is laughing till his face is red and bursting with good humor. that forbid, portly Kentuckian, with the stubble gray moustache and his hat cocked knowingly over his left eye, which comical look, mingled with such shrewd ideas as tells the poorest reader ot character thathe isa bor wit. When Joe Blackbuim has slightly recovered genial has a himself you will hear him allude to | this gentleman of the florid face and } stubby moustache as “Prock,’’? but ! if you are a close observer you will not need to be told that the famous i author of the Duluth speech and the; Penrsylvania It 1s only once in « lite-time that one gets to | and_ his a prodig- | In spite of his fierce | And | = lyou. He is the! proud possessor of a_ blue- grass farm which he may be able to show you it you go to the top of the hill, and to which he will cer- tainly invite you it you go dewn to the table and drink with him. But doubtless you enough of all this and want down and mingle with the crowd, while the perfume ot fried birds and oysters and coffee, and the chant of the negroes comes up from the hol- low there beyond. » The savory smell that was wafted from the tittle hollow where the cauldron boiled and bubbled at the foot of the old oak tree grew stron- ger and stronger as the sun ap- proached neare: the meridian. Presently there was abustable a lit- tle below where the cooking was going on, a long .able was fixed up, covered with a dazzling white cloth, and na very short space of time was groaning under the weight ot good things that were put on it.
