In August, 7,047 persons received Payments averaging $16.46. This is @ 14 per cent increase over the July total and reflects a gradual tapering off in the number of new cases as the program approaches its normal devel- opment, The average grant for August was an increase of $1.20 over the amount allowed the same month a year ago. The aid to the blind program, which did not get under way until January, 1937, increased from 67 cases in July to 71 in August with an average grant of $18.14, he stated. Many needy persons, not reached by either program, were given general re- lief. In August, 7,186 cases, repre- senting 28,814 persons, received $151,- 656 in cash grants or relief orders. A fourth program, aid to depend: ent children, will make first pay- ments to 25 children in October. Goll issued his statement to dealers after receiving an attorney general's opinion written by T. A. Thompson, assistant attorney general, Thompson explained that because of confusion resulting from the “liquor control act” and the old 3.2 beer act passed by the federal government, the 1937 legislature defined beer as ‘all beer or ale manufactured or sold in the state containing 4 per cent or less of alcohol by weight.” He said the so-called beer law regu- lates the sale of beer containing 4 per cent or less alcohol by weight while the liquor control act regulates the sale of beer or any other alcoholic beverage that contains “more than 4 per centum of alcohol by weight.” New Extension Agent In Foods Is Named Fargo, Oct. 21—Amy E. Deep Fall Plowing Kills Most "Hoppers Fargo, N. D., Oct. 21—‘“Deep fall plowing is doubtless the most effec- tive tillage method of destroying grasshopper eggs” says F. Gray Butcher, NDAC extension entomolo- gist. “To be effective, the plowing must be at least 4 to 6 inches deep, depend- ing upon the type of the soil. Deep plowing in the spring also will be ef- fective provided the soil is packed thoroughly before the eggs hatch, thus preventing the young grasshop- pers from reaching the surface.” Butcher explains that shailow soil bowel] movement doesn’t get at the cause.
