The Bismarck Imps will clash with St. Mary's at the ball park at 4 p. m. in what promises to be a close, hard- Tought game. The intra-city game was scheduled this week when Linton, St. Mary's original opponent, decided it had got- ten its aeneaule mixed a9 ae was posed to play somebody else. vThe game will mark the last home appearance of Father Tracy’s Saints. ‘Next week they journey to Hazen and the following week close out the sea- gon across the river against Mandan’s Braves. . _.The Saints bowed to the Demons, 33-0, when the two teams met in Sep- tember, but against the Imps, who will not have the weight advantage Coach Glen Hanna's first-stringers enjoyed, are conceded a good chance for vic- tory. Father Tracy and Assistant Coach Joe Meyers will be without the services of one of their regular halfbacks, speedy Nickie Schneider, who has Pulled a shoulder muscle. He is out for the remainder of the season, ace cording to Father Tracy. With this exception, the Saints’ lineup will be intact. ‘The Imps will enter the fray with a 20-12 victory over Hazen, the Saints’ Dext opponent, at their belts. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 14, 1987 Purdue Game Key to Northwestern’s Chances for Title Boilermakers Will Test Wild- ! cats Saturday; ‘Hoosier Backfield Crippled By WILLIAM WEEKES Chicago, Oct. 14 —(#)— Saturday, the day when Purdue's Boilermakers invade Dyche stadium, looks like tip- off day on Northwestern’s chances of saneing on to the Big Ten football] title. The Wildcats weren't the choice to repeat before the season started— Minnesota having been accorded the favorites's position — and their vic- tories over Iowa State and Michi- gan didn’t prove to Coach Lynn Wal- dorf that he has another title eleven. But, if they take care of Purdue de- cisively, the defending champions probably will have reason for hoping to get through the rest of their con- ference schedule without a beating. Although they took a beating from Ohio State in their opening Big Ten start, the Boilermakers showed 80 much improvement in overcoming Carnegie Tech last week, that they appear ready to fulfill pre-season promise. If they are that good Sat- urday, Northwestern’s hopes will either be crushed or enhanced. Works on Line ‘Waldorf continued to devote most of his attention to the Wildcat line Wednesday, trying to improve its of- fensive play. Michigan’s forward out- played Northwestern last week, with the result that the champions’ run- ning attack failed to produce a touchdown threat, and the scouts re- ported that Purdue's line is just as good as Michigan’ ‘The Boilermakers spent their last going over a defense calculated to stop Northwestern's Don Heap, Jack Ryan, Bernie Jefferson and Bob wisher. _ Down at Illinois, Bob. Zuppke. was outspokenly pleased with the improvement in offensive power as the wound up heavy work for Saturday's battle at Indiana. Coach Bo McMillin of the Hoosiers was forced to patch up his backfield’ when he learned that Bill Anderson, @ passing star against Minnesota, would not be able to operate against Tilinois because of injuries. Practice In Secret Minnesota practiced in secret as Bernie Bierman experimented with backfield combinations in prepara- tion for the Michigan invasion. The Wolverines, whose work pleased Harry Kipke earlier in the week, Ispsed so far that they were ordered out for a night drill in addition to the regular afternoon session. Irl Tubbs gave Iowa’s squad an- other long offensive scrimmage in an.effort to develop punch before meeting Wisconsin. The Badgers were let off with light drill to permit healing of an assortment of bruises.
