Me’n Grantland Rice. We both lost on Minnesota last ‘week. But you've got to hand it te those Nebraska huskies. They ‘won that ball game the way a game should be won. And, after all, they had it coming to them af- ter last year’s heartbreaker. ‘These other little lapses in our power of prognostication, such as Picking Colgate over Cornell, Pur- due over Ohio State, and Michi- gan over Michigan State? We Just won't mention those. By way of being honest, how- ever, here’s our score for last week's first shot: Won 23, lost 10, tied 4 It could have been worst—but not much. xk * EVERYONE A WINNER Tribune readers will have a chance to break into print as chrystal gazers themselves next week, and a chance to Triumph For Husker Line make a little cash as well. Each Mon- day this month, a score of the city’s Geading merchants, through the Trib- ‘une, will offer cash prizes to sidewalk experts picking the most winners for games scheduled the following Satur- day. Runner-ups will also get a cash prize. Look elsewhere in today’s pa- per for details of the contest. * ek * CHAMPIONSHIP GAME? The clash between the Univer- sity of North Dakota and Agricul- tural college football teams at the university homecoming in Grand Forks Oct. 30 is expected to go a long way, as usual, in determining who will be rulers of the North Central conference this fall. Right now the Bison, close observers ay, rate with the Sioux as the class of the conference, with two loop wins al- ready to their credit. But the univer- sity boys are the defending champions and will be playing on their home turf. And their first two games this season haven't pulled them down any in the standings either. But, before that time the Herd from Fargo and the Tribe from Grand Forks will have a few oth- er things to take care of The Bi- son play South Dakota State in a circuit tilt at Fargo Saturday, Carleton at ‘Northfield, Minn. Oct, 16, and Moorhead State teachers Oct. 22, The Nodaks ‘With the pelt of the South Dakota Coyote tucked under their belts, the Gioux have only the Bison and the Tu- tors left between them and another pennant. But in those two elevens they meet what observers class as the toughest outfits in the conference, long with the Sioux themselves and the already-vanquished Coyotes. x * * THOSE DEMONS Coach Glenn Hanna's men succeed- ing in keeping the dope bucket right- side-up last Friday when they beat Mandan’s fighting Braves 6 to 0 in their first major game of the season, but they did't have an easy time doing \t. The Braves, always at their best against the Demons, kept plugging to theend. If they had had a little more Dffensive snap, they might have turn- ed the tables. Considerably improved defensively ver the showing they made against Bt. Mary’s in their inaugural perform- Arce, the Demons still seem to be short on that vital “will-to-win” spirit. ‘With two of the best backs that will be ‘seen here this fall on their squad, they nevertheless didn’t seem to have much Scoring drive. They could reel off first-downs when they didn’t count for thuch, but when a touchdown appear- @d in the offing they seemed to bog of the old do-or-die spirit, the never- @ay-quit idea, Until they show a little More of that and appear a little less lackadaisical on the attack, they a ‘won't stand much show aganst some f nf the big-time foes they meet this fall. A little more imaginative quarter- backing might help too. Against the any other play. But practically every time it ran into a stone wall.
