PULLS MARKET UP DURING MILD RALLY Quiet Strength During Quiet Day's Trading New York, Aug. 24.—(7}—A drag- ging pulled stock market jeaders into @ mild rally Tuesday. In another of the slowest days of the year, steels and specialties showed quiet strength. After a dip at the opening, prices soon began to harden and gains of fractions to 2 or more points were soon widely distributed. The pep quickly went out of the move and extreme advances were pared or cancelled in a number of cases before the finish. Apathy was pronounced in the fourth hour when only 46,000 shares changed hands, day were around 550,000 shares. Bonds and commodities were mixed. Livestock SOUTH ST. PAUL South St. Paul, ASE, 24. dD. Buying was credited to eastern sources and presumably was based to some extent on strength in the north- west marketing centers where move- ment of spring wheat is at a peak. One report from Minneapolis in- dicated demand for every car of grain received there was brisk. Hedging pressure increased before the close and talk of big Russian wheat pro- duction created uncertainty about im- porters’ demand for the domestic sur- plus. Wheat closed % higher to % lower compared with Monday’s finish, Sept. 1.04% to 1.05, Dec. 1.06% to 1.07, and corn was % off to 1 cent up, Sept. 97 to 97%, Dec. 65%. Oats were un- changed to % higher.
