+ Cleanii : b i i & % H ss Means Health and Health Means Happiness, Fisher Says By DR. A. M. FISHER City Health Officer +1 the time of the year has strived when we enter upon a cam- to clean and beautify our city. I: is only natural, however, after our winter months have passed, to find accumulations of ashes, rubbish and cther discarded articles piled in un- sightly heaps about the premises, alleys and vacant lots. It does not seem possible that all this could ac- cumulate during such a short period, but nevertheless an excursion through the city reveals the obvious fact that triere is much need for cleaning up streets, yards, houses, and alleys. Cer- tain repairs also are necessary and painting would improve many prem- ises. ‘A woman in one of the factory towns ct Massachusetts recently agreed to take charge of a little girl while her mothe: factory worker, was away tor a day's work. The woman with whom the child hhad been left endeavored to keep her contented and among other things gave her a candy dog, with which she played happily all day. ‘At night the dog had disappeared and the woman inquired whether it had been lost. “No, it ain’t lost,” answered the little girl. “I kept it ‘most all day, but it got so dirty that I was ashamed to look at it; s0 I et it.” Need Another Remedy Many of us are beginning to get ashamed of looking at certain dirty objects; about our city, but can’t eat it so the only thing we can do is re- move the dirt and give those objects @ bright, clean and cheerful appear- ance. Nobody honestly enjoys living in » but it is human nature to become accustomed to our eurroundings and overlook certain things which catch our eye if we come there a stranger. That is why dirty yards and dirty houses persist in re- taining their dirt with no efforts made to remove them. One of the chief values of clean-up week is that it serves to call our at- tention to these things which other- ‘wise we may have overlooked. How- ever, if a person’s attention is called to accumulations of dirt and nothing is done about it, there is something Tadically wrong. Now is the time for everyone of us to take invoice of our own home sur- the situation cause of mere association with it. « Battle for Cleanliness I know that the eternal and con- tinuous battle for cleanliness is not TAKE A STROLL THROUGH PEACOCK ALLEY. They tell how General Sher- man once stopped at a country home where a tin basin and roller-towel sifficed for the family’s ablutions. For two mornings the small boy of the household watched in silence the visitor's toilet. When on the third day the toothbrush, nail-file, whisk- broom, and the rest had been duly used this small boy asked: “Say, mister, air you always that much trouble to yourself?” Keeping clean is a certain amount of trouble but also it is a great amount o: satisfaction to the individual to know that he is clean and that he 3s living in clean, healthful and sani- tary surroundings. This satisfaction is well worth the cost and effort of re- moving a little dirt as it collects. Of course, it’s a whole lot easier to remove it that way—as it collects in- stead of waiting for an annual scrub- bing, but since most of us are pro- crastinators in this matter we usually let things go until such a state is reached that a city-wide clean-up campaign is necessary to call the mat- ter to everyone’s attention and get something really worth-while done in the way of removing dirt and mak- ing needed repairs and giving a coat of paint to buildings which need it, not only for appearance sake but for their own protection as well. All Citizens Obligated Every member of a community has a duty and obligation to that com- munity in exchange for certain bene- fits he derives such as the city police and fire protection, parks and high- ways, the public library, the depart- ment of health, sanitation, schools ard the like. Certainly I would hesitate to take up a permanent residence in a city which failed to show a bright, clean nd inviting appearance. That is why I say that it is a duty and an obliga- tion for every citizen of Bismarck to take an active part in this annual clean-up campaign and do something really worthwhile to improve the tity’s eppearance as well as make more pleasant their own individual sur- roundings. If the people who live in a com- munity fail or refuse to take any in- terest in that citys’ appearance they can expect in time that community will not be a particularly pleasant place for them to live, to rear a fam- ily or to attract new citizens to set- tle permanently. However, if the people of the community do individ- vally and collectively take an inter- est in the appearance of their city the result will be a progressive, cheerful and pleasant community, offering numerous advantages to its residen and attracting new citizens to take up residence here. Laxineés 14 Obstacte Many people have neglected to take this interest either because they have not been informed of the importance fof their active participation in com- munity affairs or because they are too lazy to make the effort necessary. Speaking of laziness, I am reminded cf a little story.
