O. P. As the supreme court fight simmers down to a long and wearisome debate and the atmosphere clears somewhat, polit- ical observers have time to appraise the situation. It may be * significant that the majority of them feel President Roosevelt will get what he wants, or at least a satisfactory compromise. | seomed unprepared i : x : Se Ee One of the most disturbing suggestions is that by Mark ue 5 Sullivan, noted political writer, in a recent article. This polit- | ce " ical sage, after pointing out that Democrats must ‘carry the banner if the fight against the court plan is to be won, suggests | P's? that the Republicans be prepared to abandon their identity in the congressional and senatorial elections of 1938 and possibly in the presidential election of 1940 as well. His explanation is that where Democratic senators and ~ congressmen enlist against the presidential plan efforts will be made to defeat them in the party primaries when they run again. In order to save them from political harm and to dimin- ish presidential influence at this time, Sullivan would have the Republicans agree that in all such cases they will file no candidates of their own and instead will enter the Democratic primaries in support of the man who-stood against the presi- dent. The suggestion is unworthy of Mr. Sullivan’s ranking as a political commentator and certainly is poor advice for the Re- publicans, They are in the minority, it is true, but not as great a minority as their lack of public offices would seem to indicate.
