THE BISMARCK TRIB SATURDAY, DECEMBER 12, 1936 Demons Flash Mid-Season Form to Conquer Hi-Liners, 26-21 BARLY ElceT-PONT [Dobler’s Basket in Overtime Period Enables Linton to Defeat Saints - ~ MARGIN IS DECISIVE | SoHNNY DAWSON TO GET BRIDIE TWO BOUTS ON CHARITY FIGHT | | "FACTOR IN VICTORY Beall, Peterson, Tavis, Claus- nitzer Show Up Well in Bismarck Lineup OLSON LEADS VALLEY CITY Imps ‘Trounce Driscoll, 28-11, With Bob Yeasley Setting Scoring Pace Flashing occasional bursts of mid- @eason form, Glenn Hanna's Demons scored a convincing 26-21 victory over Joe Rognstad’s Hi-Liners in a fast basketball contest here Friday night, the Bismarck quint’s last home @ppearance prior to the Christmas holidays, Jumping to an 8-0 lead in the first five minutes, the Maroon and White agers dominated the play all the ‘way, maintaining at least a five- point margin throughout. The locals ‘were ahead 17-10 at the halfway mark. Valley City's biggest bid for the Jead came in the fourth quarter when baskets by Ordean Olson, center, and Gig Erickson, guard, and a free throw by Donald Sathe, who replaced Erickson in the back court after the Veteran had gone out on four per- sonals, closed the gap to five points Gust after the final whistle. Tonight Valley City goes to Man- d@an to engage Coach Leonard Mc- Mshan’s Braves while the Demons take a rest in preparation for a three-game road trip which will take them into Minnesota next week. Yeasley Leads Imps Paced by Bob Yeasley, the Imps made easy work of defeating Driscoll in the preliminary game played be- fore approximately 1,300 Capital City fans. The score of the first game ‘was 28 to 11. A basket by rangy Bob Tavis in the first half minute of play touched off a Demon scoring spurt that put the locals ahead 8-2 at the end of the first quarter. Apparently con- fused by having Captain Bob Peter- 0n jump center and then drop back to guard, the Hi-Liners permitted Tavis to get in the clear and he dropped in a nice one-handed shot trom the side. Quick to follow up the advantage Buddy Beall broke in fast to add another field goal and Helmuth Clausnitzer and Peterson each counted once from the floor before Valley's Wayne Zimmerman could break through the Bismarck defense to score with a nice looping shot. Displaying a good passing attack the Demons protected that margin throughout the rest of the half and but for Olson’s two nice tip-ins under the basket the Hi-Liners would have gone off the floor at the intermis- sion with more than a seven-point margin to overcome. Increase Margin Olson, who looks like a youngster but played a stellar game at the pivot position, started things out right for Valley City in the second half when he bagged a long try but Tavis ‘and Beall each tallied once to in- crease the Demons’ lead to 21-12 at the three-quarter mark. A pair of gift shots by William Delmore, substitute center, fiela goals by Erickson, Olson and Bob) Carter and another free throw by Bathe efter the final whistle com- prised the Hi-Liners’ scoring in the last period, matched in part by bas- kets by Jack Bowers and Peterson for the Demons. | From the time Tavis sank the first) basket until the game's end there was no letup in the speed of the play. Both teams “hawked” the ball 60 closely that infractions of the rules were frequent with 14 fouls being called on the Demons and nine on Valley City. Erickson and Zimmer- man went out of the game late in the fourth quarter with four personals. Both teams failed to capitalize on the gift shots, however, Bismarck making only two out of 10 chances and Valley City five out of 17. Olson High Scorer For the Hi-Liners, Olson, who took high-scoring honors with his eight points, Erickson and Zimmerman were outstanding while in the Bis- marck lineup Beall, Tavis, Peterson and Clausnitzer showed up to the best advantage. In the preliminary, Yeasley, Les- ter Kelley and Charles Corwin with ten, six and eight points, respectively, set .the ‘scoring pace in the one- sided game. The Imps led Driscoll, 9-0 at theend of the first quarter, and were ahead 51-1 at the half. Coach I, W. Huss hed a full team of fresh- men in during the final quarter and the Driscoll quint, led by Pederson, center, counted eight points. The Val.
