In announcing the series “a Christ- mas gift to opera’s radio audience,” David Sarnoff explained that the programs would be inaugurated with the Metropolitan’s annual Christmas performance of Humperdinck's fairy- tale opera, “Hansel and Grettel,” on the afternoon of Dec. 24. This will be offered as a prelude to the Satur- day matinge broadcasts which will be- ae Dec. 26 and continue each Satur- day afternoon throughout the Metropolitan season. Broadcasting in Entirety “These performances of the great musical masterpieces will be broad- cast in their entirety,” Mr. Sarnoff stated. “Through the magic of radio a front row seat in the most famous opera house in America will be made available to every music lover in the land. No longer does the enjoyment of grand opera require residence in a metropolis.” Among the voices that will reach radio listeners during the coming opera season are those of Kirsten Flagstad, Lotte Lehmann, Lily Pons, Rosa Ponselle, Elisabeth Rethberg, Lauritz Melchoir, Lawrence Tibbett, vanni Mantineili, Originally, Metropolitan Opera was broadcast by NBC as a sustaining program, but was sponsored during the 1933-24 and 1934-35 seasons. The first broadcast was on Chfistmas Day, 1931. O. B Hanson Had Idea It was O. B, Hanson, NBC chief engineer, who finally convinced the officials of the Metropolitan Opera more than six years ago that opera woulda lose nothing of its quality in a properly planned broadcast. Hanson personally planned and supervised the installation’ of the NBC equipment in the famous old opera house. The announcer’s booth at the Metropolitan is a converted box on the grand tier, sound-proofed and with a glass panel between the an- nouncer and the stage and sudience before him. In front of the an- nouncers booth is that of the NBC staff of engineers, headed by Charles Grey. In the engineers’ booth also sits Herbert B, Liversidge of the NBC production department, following the score and giving the signals to Grey when this microphone is to be brought’ into play and that one si- lenced. There are 12 NBC microphones in the opera house, but tt is seldom that all of them are in use at the same time. Microphones for the orchestra are suspended above the pit, about 35 feet above the heads of the players, while those picking up the voices of the performers are cradied in the footlights. Moriz Rosenthal to Be Featured Artist Piano -playing in the historic “Grand Manner” will be the out- standing feature of the Sunday Night at Carnegie Hall, Dec. 13, when Moriz Rosenthal, 73-year-old Polish pianist and one of the most famous of liv- ing keyboard vittuosi, will be the guest soloist. During the broadcast at 9 p. m. (CST), over the NBC-KFYR net- work, Rosenthal will play the bril- liant Hungarian Fantasia for piano and orchestra by Franz Liszt, with whom the veteran artist studied dur- ing his youth. He also will offer a group of piano solos consisting of Strauss’ “Blue Danube Waltz” and Chopin's A Major and F Major pre- ludes.
