D., Nov. 5.—(?)— Three prominent educators from Minnesota, Wisconsin, and New Jer- 1 8ey addressed more than 2,000 mem- bers of the North Dakota Education association Thursday morning at the second ‘general session of their an- nual convention here. Home economics departments should branch out and integrate their work more thoroughly with other fields of education, Dr. Ivol Spatford, assistant to the director in charge of curriculum revision at the University of Minnesota, told the delegates. She spoke on “education fore home- living—a part of all education,” and stressed the relationship of educa- tion to home life, Dr. John Guy Fowlkes, professor of education at the University of Wis- ‘|consm; asserted that ideally the ‘teachet shoulti be a directing engineer in human behavior, reflecting the spirit of unerring accuracy usually ac- credited to the scientist and wedded inseparably with the pulsating sym- pathy that should be the parents. Strikes at Disregard He atruck at the growing disregard for the “three R's” by saying that while enrichment of the curriculum is desirable, substantialities must not be lost in subject matter. His topic was “Where Is Education Going?” Discussing ‘Training in Citizenship,” Roy W. Hatch of St. Luke's college at Montclair, N. J. stressed as the three main aims—inspiration, in- formation azd_ participation—point- ing to participation as the most im- portant. “It would be wonderfully helpful,” he said, “if we could find a Tule-of-thumb for training the citi- zenship muscles of all the children in our schools, but no such rule will ever be found, because no two chil- dren are alike.” Miss Rita Murphy of Bismarck, president of the association, presided, and Rev. W. Murray Allan of Grand Forks spoke the invocation.
