On the other hand, a number of the recent leaders just managed to keep their heads above water. There was a mild retreat on late selling and the close was somewhat indefinite. ‘Transfers were around 1,600,000 shares. ‘The steels pushed upward in early dealings but most gave ground in the final hour. Motor, merchandising, of], copper and specialty stocks lent the prin-/p; cipal buying support to the list. Business and industrial news was on the optimistic side, but the thought Was expressed that actual and ex- pected extra and increased dividends, together with bright earnings state- ments, may have been discounted to a certain extent.
