Gunderson to Assist Gov-' ernor in Handling Mora- torium Cases Establishment of a special depart- ‘ment in his office to “aid” in handling of moratorium and debt adjustment cases was announced Friday by Gov- ernor Welford. He appointed 8S. D. Gunderson, Steele county attorney and former advertising manager of the state mill and elevator, to do the work of that Gepartment. z | In a letter to county debt adjust- ment board secretaries, Gov. Welford advised that “incapacity to an un- usual degree of many citizens to func- tion as normally” in the adjustment of Gebts involving real and personal property security, has led to estab- lishment of this department to aid im settling of controversies. “Not only this office but the county | seat debt adjustment boards can help in advising the people when and how the particular controversy should Properly come before the district! judge,” he wrote. | “District judges administer all | moratorium laws and have done so ™most commendably,” he stated adding | he believed that “by this means some of this burden can be lightened for | them.” His letter sought an expression from the secretaries of a “willingness not | only to function as a debt adjustment board but to informally pass on the | merits and determine what redress is | Pp le under the laws to defeat un- Ju: izure or an aggravation of cost: “In no sense is it to be construed | that debtors deliberately diminishing the value of the pledged security w no thought of paying within their ca- | Facity, are to be protected,” he said. | Mahoney Scores U. S. Olympic Team Heads! New York, Aug. 21.—()—Jeremiah | 'T. Mahoney, former president of the Amateur Athletic Union, Frid charged that the United Sta S | Olympic team “was inefficiently led by individuals seeking their own ag- grandizement rather than the com- fort and success of the teams.” Mahoney deplored in a long state- ment the dismissal of Mrs. Eleanor , Holm Jarrett, the dropping from the | international Olympic commiitee of Ernest Lee Jahncke and the suspen- sion of Jesse Owens. His statement also condemned the tactics of Avery Brundage, president of the A. A. U. and of the American Olympic committee. Mahoney charged Jahncke was Gropped because of his “criticism of | Hitler and the Nazi regime.” Waldron Given 0. H. Will Memorial Medal Fargo, N. Both Chicago and Michigan have been operating under eastern stan- dard time—the state by action of its Jegislature and Chicago by recent ac- tion of its city council.
