D., where he with Col. Roscoe Turner and Fred Key are slated for an appearance Fri- day. By this, Meyer, the only driver to win the Memorial Day grind three times, meant that the faster drivers either ran out of gasoline or met with mechanical trouble before completing the 500 miles. He admitted “stealing” both gaso- line and mileage to win the 1936 classic by “towing in” behind fast drivers. The vacuum behind a speed- ing car, he said, stepped up his speed from 112 to 117 miles per hour and ine creased his mileage by about four miles to the gallon. Fortunately, he said, he lost his most beneficial “tow” just a lap or so before the terrific driver had a mechanical accident which upset his machine and elimin- ated him. He gave another interesting side- lUght in explaining that he had a front tire blow out in - 1932 at 120 miles per hour without his knowledge at the time. He noticed it was blown out @ short time later when he lean- ed out of the car. Centrifugal force kept the tire distended even much more than naturally when inflated. Though the blowout caused him no trouble at 120 miles an hour, it did cause him trouble when he slowed down to 80 miles per. “Then I wrote my name all over the track,” he said in describing the swerving of his ma- chine. Meyer defends the Indianapolis race as motordom’s ‘best proving ground and lauded manufacturers who are brave enough to put their products to test in this great race.
