The closing tone was weak. Sales approximated 2,200,- 000 shares. the forenoon was followed by a lull that carried through to the fourth hour when some rather large sized blocks of stocks were offered at fur- ther concessions which carried prices to about the lowest of the Gay just before the close. There was a slight rebound in the final minutes. Shares ending in a 1 to 4 point lower range included Columbian Carbon, J. 41, Case, DuPont, U. 8. Steel, Bethle- hem, General Motors, Chrysler, Doug- las Aircraft, Union Carbide, Westing- house, Montgomery-Ward, Standard Oil of New Jersey, U. §. Industrial Alcohol, American Telephone, North American, New York Central, Dela- ware & Hudson, Santa Fe and Union Pacific. A few issues in the metal group dis- played resistance and ended unchang- ed or a shade higher. Corn Products also was supported. There was no late news to lighten the air of pessimism that pervaded board rooms during the forenoon, ac- centuated somewhat by selling orders from Europe, following reopening of the markets abroad after the Easter holidays. Corporation bonds were generally to the offside. There was some improve- ment in foreign currencies. Cotton was lower. ‘Lit ae ee | Produce Markets | gc eee ees CHICAGO Chicago, April 14—(4)—Butter and eggs were firm in tone Tuesday and Poultry was steady.
