AT THE MOVIES = ‘All-Color Outdoor Film Receives Wide Acclaim ‘This department's nomination for ‘The Best Picture of 1936 was made last night, and if there's ever going to be a contest to select the one best picture of all time, our answer would probably be the same! In Walter Wanger's “The Trail of the Lonesome Pine,” which is now showing at the Paramount Theatre, the producers have taken an immor- ‘tal story, beloved by two generations; selected a superb cast, headed by Sylvia Sidney, Fred MacMurray and Henry Fonda; and have added the Magic of outdoor Technicolor photo- graphy, which is so natural, so lifelike | that one loses the sense of being in a theatre, but is constantly convinced that the action is really taking place before his eyes! The story takes us back to the ‘wooded Cumberland Mountains, to the section where deadly feuds are raging among the illiterate mountain families, chief among whom are the ‘Tollivers and the Falins, whose main delight is to lie in ambush and kill each other off. ‘Brides Are Like That’ Based on ‘Applesauce’ “Brides Are Like That,” First Na- tional’s latest rollicking comedy ro- mance, is scheduled as the feature attraction at the Capital Theatre Fri- day and Saturday. The picture is based on the play, “Applesauce,” by Barry Conners, which was one of the hits of the stage. It carries a unique and most unusual plot and concerns the love affair of @ presentable young college man with @ great gift for flattery, but who much prefers to sponge on his uncle to doing any hard work. He loses out in his suit for the hand of the belle of the village be- cause of his utter irresponsibility and |his presumption that he can become engaged to her without even pro- Posing. His rival, a smug, self satis- fied doctor, after his betrothal, pre- sumes to tell his fiancee what she can and cannot do. This leads to a series of highly amusing entanglements and a start- ling climax in which the flatterer puts his rival to rout. There is an excep- tionally talented cast which is headed by Ross Alexander, Anita Louise, Joseph Cawthorn, Gene and Kath- leen Lockhart and Richard Purcell.
