ee INQUIRIES RECEIVED . AT FHA OFFICE ARE PROOF OF INTEREST Several New Apartment Houses of Four-Family Type Are Being Considered CONTRACTORS ARE BUSY Sound of Concrete Mixers, Saws and Hammers to Be Common Within 10 Days ‘Warmer weather has set the build- ing bee buzzing in Bismarck. « Within the next week or two, ac- cording to present indications, the sounds of concrete mixers, hammers and saws will again be common in the city which last year built as many private residences as the rest of North Dakota combined. . The reason this year is the same as that which prevailed last year. Many families are living in unsuitable locations and desirable property can be sold or rented with greater ease “here than anywhere else in North Dakota. Inquiry at the Federal Housing ad- ministration’s office here discloses that at least a dozen private dwell- ings and four or five apartment: houses are “on the fire” at the present moment. Design Proves Success Most of the apartment houses will be of the four-family type of which several were built last year. These consist of a building not quite two stories high with two apartments on the ground floor and two on the seoond floor. The level of the first floor is sunk below the level of the surrounding land but they escape be- ing basement apartments because they have full-size windows with the same amount of light and air as though they were built wholly above the ground level. In addition to the inquiries at the FHA a number of persons are negoti- ating with private lenders and insti- tutions- outside the provisions of the law governing the federal agency. Most of the financing, however, 1s expected to be done through the FHA's insured mortgage loan system. Meanwhile, the first house of tne season is nearing completion at 905 Ninth St. It is built by contractor Robert’ Aune next to the model house which he built last summer and which he now occupies. To Be Ready May 1 The foundation was put in last fall and work on the superstructure was begun in mid-March. Aune says it. will be.completed about May 1 and he expects to begin work immediately on: another house at 909 Ninth &t. The house now. nearing completion has an exterior finish of stained shingles and is of unique design, par- ticularly. with regard to the entrance. It isso arranged that a person en- tering its main-floor hall can go to any part of the house or to the base- ment. without entering any other room. ‘A number of other contractors also are busy on jobs initiated last fall. In the rural districts surrounding Bismarck ‘interest in building also is picking up with indications that there will be more building on the farms and in the smailer cities than has deen true for almost'a decade. Shelves, Cabinets May Solve Problem Shelves. built-in cabinets are the answer to many of the housewife’s kitchen: problems. Utility and at- tractiveness ar. gained by installa- tion of shelves and cabinets to house kitchen equipment and materials. For a small outlay: such improvements more than justify the expense entail- ed. Funds with which eee such permanent improvement home are available at private fi- nancial institutions which lend money under terms of the Federal Housing administration’s Modernization Credit Plan. ¥ eGVu__ee—eEeee eee _ Phone 1326 for Ashmore and Ellingson For estimates on painting, pa- pering and decorating. FARMER ENDS LIFE INBARRICADED CELL Worry Over Quarrel Thought to Have: Prompted Suicide in Mohall Jail Mohall, N. D., April 13.—(?)—Be- hind barricaded doors of the Ren- ville county jail, Gustav Krueger, about 40, farmer of the Norma and ‘Tolley communities, took his life Sunday by drinking from a bottle of powerful antiseptic used in disinfect- ing the jatlroom.
