Klein cies still are mystified over the origin of Crater Lake, the entrancing deep blue “Sea of Silence” in Oregon, which appears on the 6-cent National Parks stamp issued in 1934. This remarkable scenic attraction is six miles across and 2000 feet | deep, gem blue in color. Its sur- face is more than 6000 feet above sea level, and rising from it are cliffs of lava and other volcanic rock from 500 to 2000 feet high. Out of the lake juts Wizard sland, a cone of lava that geolo- gists believe was the last thrust of a volcanic eruption, which might ave taken place during the Ice Age. The theory is that the vol- cano, which now is dead lava and rock, only its base remaining, either blew off its top or collapsed, leaving the deep crater.
