POPE SORROWS AS CHRISTMAS DAWNS ON BLOODY SCENES Pontiff Still Hopes But Sees Menacing Clouds Over Future of World | Vatican City, Dec. 24.—(#}—Pope! Pius sadly admitted Tuesday that his hope for a Christmas of peace would not be fulfilled. | He told 34 cardinals who brought | him Christmas greetings that “we have not abandoned hope” but that these are “moments darkened by mel- ancholy, menacing clouds, and human bloodshed.” His holiness told his prelates: “These are days of the gravest pre- occupation, holding the world in pain- ful and tormenting suspense. We truly wish to find and to make a beneficial contribution to all these complex problems, “Until now, we had hoped to bring today, in this beautiful hour serene, @ reassuring word.” Favors Modern Attitude In an unannounced encyclical on “Priesthood” the pope also counseled the clergy to be “healthily modern.” The pontiff's letter was dated De- cember 20, the day after he completed elevation of 20 new cardinals. It was the 56th anniversary of the pope's ordination. The encyclical dealt in detail with the priest’s mental equipment, duty and education, and concluded with “practical advice.” The priest, the encyclical said, is “another Christ” and must have a thorough grasp of sacred learning, but also “must be graced by no less knowledge and culture than is usual mong the well bred, well educated people of his day.” Welcomes Healthy Initiative ‘The pope added that the priest “must be as healthily modern as is An open admission that he and his government were guilty of an error in judgment in accepting the Paris peace proposals to end the Italo Ethiopian conflict was made by Pri British parliament. The promoter postponed the fight while in Havana, then in new York said it was definitely off. He spoke of being frightened by the display guns and mentioned the possibility kidnaping. Havana newspapers demanded gov- ernment action to offset the story of Jacobs, which they called a “shame- less lie.” Thes Cuban tourist commis- sion in a statement referred to the contentions of Jacobs as “absolutely false.” The’ sea's temperature at one point off Alaska, is 18 degrees warmer 20 fathoms down than it is at the sur- face.
