As in the novel, which the film ef-} fectively highlights, the picture deals with @ proud Southern family, rich in tradition and accomplishment, which responds to the call to arms when war sears the country. Exciting war scenes serve as the picture's background, as do the scenes of plantation negroes who respond to their liberation with mixed feelings of Joy and sadness, Margaret Sullavan plays the pop- ular heroine of Stark Young's novel} and by her moving performance | proves that she ranks high among | the emotional actresses on the screen. | Randolph Scott is effective as her sweetheart, and those three outstand- | ing character players, Walter Con- nolly, Janet Beecher and Elizabeth Patterson do well in carefully de- lineated parts. Though he hopes to be alone, a series of unexpected and mysterious visitors arrive and his solitude is turned into a turmoil, amid which the heroine remains almost as baffling as the rest. How the exciting circumstances are finally made clear and the lovers unit- ed, comprises the ending of this uni- que screen offering, rated as one of the year's outstanding films.
