Klein JURISTS to the Hawaiian is. lands, the South Seas, and Af. rica are amused by the agility with which natives race up and down the tall palm trees, to collect their fruits. But it’s just like walking to the climbers. Resting back on a broad leather band that runs-around his body and the tree trunk, the climber throws the trunk end upward to the highest frond he can reach and Jerks himself aloft. The fronds that jut out of the trunk are se- cure footholds, and on these he actually walks, and even runs, up * to the treetop. ATTEMPTS SUICIDE Police Discover Attempt of Law- ton to Take Life in St. Paul Jail Fred Lawton, alias Fred Lawrence, paroled North Dakota convict, who was wounded Dec. 10 in an attempted holdup of the Hotel St. Paul and who later escaped from a guarded room at Ancker hospital, St. Paul, early Wednesday unsuccessfully attempted suicide by hanging in his cell in the St. Paul jail. According to Associated Press dis- patches, a police guard, stationed at the cell to hold constant surveillance over the former convict, discovered him with a strip of blanketing looped about his neek when they changed shifts last night. A police surgeon disclosed the at- tempt had been thwarted before Law- ton could injure himself. Lawton, who was paroled here just a short time before the holdup epi- sode, was rushed into court Wednes- day after Assistant County Attorney James Lynch explained the “sheriff doesn’t want him.” The case, how- ever, was continued to Thursday for pleading. Chief of Police C. W. Coulter an- nounced a 30-day suspension for Pa- trolman Albert Herzog, assigned to guard the prisoner, because he had left 15 minutes early. Patrolman James Fahey, who came on duty next, discovered the suicide attempt. Guffey Asks Hoover To Answer Question Washington, Dec. 18.—()—Demo- cratic leaders thrust out Wednesday in a counter attack against prelimin- ary skirmishes of Republicans. Senator Guffey (Dem., Pa.) his party’s senatorial campaign commit- tee chairman, talked of former Pres- ident Hoover's St. Louis speech and declared: “If the ex-president really believes his own philosophy, I wish he Would tell us why the American people al- most unanimously pitched him out of office.” Hoover Takes Month To Write Speeches Chicago, Dec. 18.—(®)—What form- er President Herbert Hoover does be- tween speeches, his associates say, is work on his next one. He takes a month, on the average, to write such an address as he delivered Monday in St. Louis, loading his guns care- fully for the next attack on the Roosevelt administration’s policies.
