PERA SURVEY FINDS £4,604 HANDICAPPED! “ a1 Per Cent of Total Registered in N. D. Needed Medical Attention Approximately 93 per cent of North Dakota's handicapped Tesifents now registered with the state health de- partment are either general medical, orthopedic or mental retardation cases, according to Miss Ruth Wis- naes, state nursing supervisor, who ted a survey made by FERA nurses. Beginning in June the FERA nurses made a concerted effort to register every handicaybed person in the state, and on Sept. 25 the health de- Partment had registrations for 1,604 cases, she said. General medical handicaps includ- ing muscular defects, nervous disor- ders, skin diseases, glandular defects, etc.,, are responsible for 41 per cent of the total. Orthopedic defects in- cluding both congenital deformities and those brought on by disease and injury rank next with 39 per cent. Mental retardation is responsible for only 13 per cent, while the other 7 Percent includes underprivileged children, unmarried mothers, tuber- culosis and other communicable dis- eases. The survey is not yet complet- ed, Miss Wisnaes said. In making this survey the nurses carefully checked both hereditary and | environmental factors and, along with the history of each case, made note of the treatment to date and the phy- siclan’s recommendations for further treatment. As the majority of cases are children, the health department | is working with the state children’s bureau as well as the state depart-| ment of vocational education and re-| habilitation. Many fraternal and charitable organizations Have co- operated with county officials to} carry on much corrective work dur-) ing the last few years, she said. | She pointed out that under the) FERA corrective care program in ef- fect from August, 1934 to August, 1935, approximately 15,000 children had been treated for physical de- fects. A total of $158,000 was spent in| the various counties for vision and | dental correction and minor opera- tions. Of this $23,000 alone was spent ' for glasses while doctors -were paid $75,000 and dentists, $60,000. Hoskins Is Second in Command of ‘U’ Corps; ! Grand Forks, N.
