. { Tribune’s Grain, Livestock and Market Report for Wed., Oct. 30 UTILITIES RESISTANT T0 BEARISHNESS AS PRICES ARE ERRATIC Many of Recent Stock Leaders Fall Off Under Pressure of Profit Takers New York, Oct. 30.—()—Highly er- ratic tendencies prevailed in Wed- nesday’s stock market. The utilities, generally, were resistant, and special- ties were attractive, but many of the recent leaders fell off under profit taking. Fast backing and filling movements put the ticker tape behind on several occasions, The pace slowed later. ‘The close was rather irregular. Trans- fers approximated 2.200.000 shares. Bullish forces got behind the power stocks in the morning and blocks of several thousand shares changed hands at advances of fractions to around a point. Other departments failed to extend sympathetic support, however, and the utilities lost heart and retraced their steps to about their starting levels, [Grain Grain Quotations There was no outstanding bearish | Mi news and brokerage commentators were inclined to attribute the declin- ing trend to technical factors. A re- action had been expected in view of the-lengthy forward strides of favor- ite equities. The motors and steels ‘were under pressure during the great- | Ma: er part of the session. President Hecht of the American Bankers association talked with Pres- ident Roosevelt and said banking sta- tistics continued to show increasing business activity. He said tnere was a danger of undue inflation in excess bank reserves, now at a record peak. He also urged withdrawal of the’gov- ernment from activities in the finan- cial world as fast as the banks are | nec, able to take over the work. Grains sagged and cotton was dif- fident. Bonds were uneven. Foreign exchanges were mixed, far eastern silver currencies slumping ov fears of inflation and political conditions. Shares that were steady to a point higher included Pullman, Deere, Stan- dard Brands, American Water Works, Cotumbia Gas, United Corp., Public Service of New Jersey, American Smelting, Kennecott, Cerro de Pasco, Collins & Aikman, Schenley, United | Dec.
