THE BISMARCK TRIBUNE, TU. TULANE UNDERDOG | AGAINST GOPHER'S POWERFUL ELEVEN; Fordham Rams Favored t Whip Vanderbilt; Michigan State Is Favored NAVY SHOULD BEAT YALE| Temple, “Ohio State, Alabama, | Purdue, California Slated for Easy Wins By JOCK SUTHERLAND Coach, University of Pittsburgh Pittsburgh, Oct. 15—(NEA)—Four intersectional games headline the gridiron schedule for Saturday. since it is uppermost in my mind, I may be pardoned for discussing the Pitt-Notre Dame game first have been building} or this season by defeating the Irish the last three years. Elmer Layden’s boys have been pointing for us, aggregaton that is the be: since 1930, our team of sophomores will have to be extremely lucky tu win the game I do not believe there is any ques-} tion as to the strength of Layden’s 1935 squad, Two whole teams made up of veterans, fast backs, two tackles of unusual ability, ends far above par. and smart, fast quarterbacks give the Irish a decided edge in our game. | Picks Rams | Ray Morrison gave New Yorkers a treat when he took his Southern Methodist Mustangs to the big town last fall against Fordham, and he} give them another treat with} aerial attack Saturday.) But Jimmy Crowley's Rams will have} the last say in this one. Minnesota and Tulane, two out- standing sectional leaders, battle this week in Minneapolis. Tulane is bet- ter after the Auburn defeat, but wil! find Minnesota coming back strong after a hard victory over Nebraska. ‘The Gophers should win. Michigan State should experience no more than the usual trouble in de- feating Boston College. This has al- ways meant trouble enough, but the Spartans have the edge. Service Teams Favored In the east, the big battle will be between Harvard and the Army. Ex- perience lies on the side of the Ca- dets, but Dick Harlow is making prog- ress and may catch the Soldiers. The nod goes to West Point, however. Navy's speedy eleven will run into trouble at Yale, but if the Middies’ line holds up it looks like a defeat for old Eli Lou Little 1s going to cause Penn a lot of grief. The Quakers have had two real battles in a row against! Princeton and Yale, and Columbia ts likely to defeat the early favored Penn team. Fop Warner's powerful ‘Temple team will have too much speed and} weight for Carnegie Tech Tartans,| and will hand the Plaid its second de- feat of the season. Reserve strength will tell the story in this one. \ Brown isn’t having a good year, and| it will be worse after Saturday, for it meets an improved Dartmouth eleven,| just finding out what Red Blaik’s sys-| tem is all about. | Holy Cross _ will have too much} weight for Manhattan, although Chick Meehan may pull a surprise. i Three Big Ten games hold the tn-| terest of the midwest t Buckeyes, Easy Ohio State isn’t going to find North- western very formidable, and the po erful Buckeyes should win as they please. | Purdue, minus scoring stars, 1s still! too powerful for Chicago, even with | Berwanger, and must be rated a slight! favorite. There isn’t much to choose from in the Michigan-Wisconsin _ battle.! Both are experiencing bad years, and} breaks will decide the outcome Undefeated elevens will be threat- ened in the south, Despite the fac: that Auburn has a fine team, I look| for Kentucky to win, chiefly because of Chet Wynne and his great ball- carrying back, Johnson. Alabama is going to keep Tenne- see on the losing side this fall, a new experience for the Volunteers. Duke and Georgia Tech meet in a real headliner, and Wallace Wade's eleven has learned not to be surprised} at anything the Yellowjackets may do, Another step upward for the Blue Devils. Georgia, bigger and better than in! some years, will be a little too much for North Carolina State, where Hunk Anderson is doing a good job of building. There is little doubt as to what will happen when Carl Snavely'’s North Carolina team meets Davidson. The ‘Tar Heels are definitely one of the best teams of the season . Champs Due to Fall In the Missouri Valley Nebraska gets a crack at Kansas State, holder of the Big Six title in 1934. It will be a case of too much Cardwell and LeNoue for the Aggies. Capt. Biff Jones will keep Oklahoma on the winning path by beating Iowa State, a team that has been having its troubles. In the southwest, Southern Meth- odist will throw a real scare into Rice’s championship eleven, but there is still a little too much experience on the side of the Owls. Texas, although it has had its un- pleasant games this fall, still has too many good men to lose to always dan- gerous Cetenary. Texas A. & M. showed enough in holding Temple to a low score to warrant the nod over Texas Chris- tian. On the Pacific Coast. little Santa Ciara will be heavily outmanned when it hits California, and the Bears are heavy favorites. — Washburn, Sutherland Picks Notre Dame to DAY, OCTOBER 15, 1935 Intersectional Games Will | Purdue Turns Back Fordham, 20-0 | Maniact, Fordham back, went up in the air in an attempt to gain but to no avail as Purdue's alert defense brought him to the ground. Minneapolis, Oct. 15.—(?)—The cheering about the Nebraska game died to a normal conversational tone at Minnesota Tuesday as the Gophers began working on a_ reception for Tulane’s flashy football team at Me- morial stadium Saturday. | Monday was a day of rest for the \weary Gophers, some of whom lost imore than ten pounds in the muggy, ;humid weather at Lincoln last week- end. Some of the boys were in sweat suits for a light workoyt but most of them were in civilian clothes along jthe sidelines to watch the reserves go through their paces against the freshmen first stringers. Tulane, according to the reports of Red Dawson and Sig Harris, Gopher Scouts, has a fast, fairly heavy team and is well-equipped with reserve power. Ted Cox, ex-Gopher tackle, and coach of the Green Wave, will bring a team that is well coached and ex-| tremely speedy, they say, and the Gophers will have to be on their toes te protect their unbeaten record.
