1 NEW HIGHS AS OTHERS SINK LOWER Buying Flurry Fades Out Into Quiet Selling Session New York, Sept. 9.—()—Stocks ‘worked at cross purposes in Monday’s “market, a number getting into new high ground for the year while oth- ers were unsettled by profit taking. The ticker tape fell behind in a fast morning buying flurry, but trad- ing later turned quiet as further real- izing appeared. The close was some- what irregular. Transfers approxi- mated 2,000,000 shares. The decline of some of the recent ‘sharp gainers was interpreted yo Mat ious analysts as a “healthy” correc tion and was not looked upon as in- dicating any decisive alteration of the upward trend, ‘The American Iron é& Steel Insti- tute’s estimate of current steel mill operations at 49.7 per cent of capaci- ty, an increase of 3.9 points over last week’s output, was not unexpected in the financial sector. In only three weeks since June, 1934, has this rate se been exceeded. The report of Montgomery Ward showing a pickup of 20.8 per cent in its August business over the corre- sponding month last year attracted attention to some of the merchandis- ing equities. Cotton did not exhibit the buoy- ancy that some had expected follow- ing issuance of the government's crop figures. The staple was only mod- erately firm during the greater part of the day. Wheat sagged at Chi-/Se Foreign cago. Bonds were mixed, exchanges were rather firm. Fresh support helped many shares in the last half hour. Allied Chem- ical was a star performer with a gain of 5 points. Louisville & Nashville got up 2, Others, fractions to a point or so improved, included American Telephone, U. S. Steel, Inland Steel, Montgomery Ward, Sears-Roebuck, General Motors, Chrysler, Western Union, N. ¥. Central and Santa Fe. The metals were heavy throughout. U. 8, Smelting and Cerro de Pasco | DE. were down about 2 each and Ameri- can Smelting and Anaconda were soft, Pullman dropped 2, Union Pa- cific 1 and Westinghouse, Johns- Manville, Consolidated Gas, Case and Goodyear were backward. +~—_—_________-¢ i Produce Markets : CHICAGO Chicago, Sept. 9.—(P}—Butter was unsettled in tone Monday and eggs were firm. At: tendants pronounced his condition as “doubtful.” Guards who found Monroe were of the opinion that he had fallen to the ground from the side of the silo, He was probably struck by one of the swinging doors and knocked off the ladder, they said.
