THE BISMARCK TRIBUNE, TUESDAY, AUGUST 28, 1934 Lee Blanks World-Champion Giants for Third Successive Win BESTS SCHUMACHER 'QUINCY TROUPE PACES LOCAL HITTERS WITH .390 AVERAGE Fv Avorn} ONLY SEVEN GAMES AS GUBS CLOSE GAP IN NATIONAL LEAGUE American League Situation Re- mains Unchanged as Yanks and Tigers Win SENATORS DEFEAT BROWNS Dodgers Win Ninth Game of Western Trip Hammering Out Victory Over Cards (By the Associated Press) Young Bill Lee, six-foot three-inch right hander, has reasserted his mast- ery over the world champion New York Giants just when it would do the Chicago Cubs the most good. The burly rookie, striking his best form in weeks, scored his third suc- cessive victory over the champions Monday, shading Hal Schumacher in ® great pitching duel, 1-0. Lee gave only three hits, permitted no Giant to plant his feet on third base and allowed only three to get as far as second. Coming on the heels of Lon- nie Warneke’s three-hit triumph of the previous day, the victory enabled the Cubs to shave the Giants’ Nation- al League lead to 4": games. Lee needed assistance to protect his perfect record against the Giants and he got it from his fellow-rookie, George (Tut) Stainback, and the vet- eran, Hazen Cuyler. In the seventh. the fleet Cuyler singled and came all the way home on Stainback’s double against the left field wall. That was the end of the day's scoring as Schu- macher gave only five hits. Tigers Continue Race ‘The American League situation, in the meantime, remained unchanged as the Detroit Tigers waloped the Philadelphia Athletics, 11-0, while New York's Yankees were squeezing out a 3-2 decision over the Chicago’ ‘White Sox. This combination of re- sults left the Tigers still 412 games in front. Tom Bridges gave the A's only five hits as he pitched his first victory over the Tigers’ current eastern tour. His mates supported him with a 14- hit drive to which Manager Mickey Cochrane and Marvin Owen contribut- ed three hits apiece. Babe Ruth's pinch double in the seventh drove in the tieing and winning runs for the Yankees and ruined Milt Gaston's seven-hit pitching performance for the Pale Hose. Troupe's average, which dropped two Points during the games played since August 3 and not including the five exhibition games with Jamestown against the Chicago American Giants at Winnipeg, is quite typical of the other hitting leaders, averages com- piled Friday showed. Haley's percent- age fell off ten points and Fisher's mark considerably more than that. Down lower in the batting order there was a very noticeable improve- ment with Massmann and McCarney boosting their marks 13 points each on Morlan jumping from 229 to Seven Games Left Of the seven games to be played on Bismarck's schedule, two will be play- ed away from home and the rest at the local “big league” park. Tuesday Bismarck engages Devils Lake for the third game with that club this year and Wednesday they tangle with Valley City at the Hi-Line ball park. Thursday they meet the New Eng- land club in the first appearance of that team at the local diamond. New England claims an almost unbeaten record among independent non-salar- ied teams and has defeated Beulah and Dickinson already this year. Winding up the season's schedule, Bismarck will play a four-game series with Beulah and Dickinson, Sunday and Labor Day. The locals will meet each team twice during the two big days. As an anti-climax to the season, Manager Neil Churchill has signed to meet Earl Mack's American League All-Stars, October 6. The big league In This Corner . .
