By William Ferguson W ENGLAND, AT THE MOVIES | Something New | In Entertainment Ranks with Year’s Best The newest cycle of entertainment | in the motion picture world is bring- ing back to the screen the romantic musical picture. Though the revue type of “musi- cal” has lately attained great suc- cess and again established the vogue of music on the screen, it has been a long time since the theatres of the country have presented a picture which might be truly described as a, “musical romance,” exemplified on the stage for all time in “Blossom Time.” The forerunner of the new vogue is “Beloved,” which starts tonight at the Capitol Theatre, an epic drama with music which presents John Boles and Gloria Stuart in featured roles. The story presents the ro- mantic career of a struggling com- poser throughout his lifetime, and be- fore a constantly changing back- ground covers a span of an entire century. In the first scene Boles is seen in his cradle as a baby, and in the final fade-out he appears as an old man of 96. Incidental to the story the screen presents stirring pictures of important historical events in the growth of the United States, until the final scene takes place in the year 1933. “Beloved,” produced by B. F. Zeid- man, was directed by Victor Schert- zinger, and the cast supporting Boles and Miss Stuart include Dorothy Pet- erson, Edmund Breese, Ruth Hall, An- derson Lawler, Lucille La Verne, Richard Carle and many other screen favorites. From the famous play by Alberto Ca- sella, adapted to English by Walter Ferris, Paramount gave the screen Play into the capable hands of Max- well Anderson, Pulitzer prize winner, and Gladys Lehman. The story is based on the intriguing idea of Death, the eternal shadow, taking a three-day holiday that he may come to this world to taste life's Pleasures to the full. He comes as a gay, dashing, ro- mantic Prince, his real person un- known to the guests at the house par- ty at which he makes his appearance. For three days, he particiaptes in all their games and pastimes, seeking to find some reason for man’s love of life and fear of death. But the prince becomes bored with life's pleasures. He saves the excitement of love until nearly the end of the holiday. And that, too, disillusions him. He is unable to find an unselfish love, a love that knows no fear, @ love so eternal that even the knowledge of his true conraeier would be unable to shat- r it, Almost at the end of his stay, his search is successful. He meets a beautiful young girl and in her arms finds all of life's beauty. Then his holiday is over and, like any mortal man, he is afraid. dreads to leave the life he finds so dear.
